I have a 39' MH with 3 slides. After a couple of months it gets smaller and smaller. I miss my work shop, hobby room, land and gardens. Full timing is not for me.

On a DP you lose the storage under the bed and the back trunks. Not so on a 5th wheel.

foot for foot, yes. no wasted space for a engine. Also the slides can be deeper. Don't have to get from the drivers seat to the back of the 5th wheel with the slides in.

I have also drove several DP's. I was also not impressed with the ride. At highway speeds they were not any quieter than my 2 gas MH's. The acceleration and hill climbing was no better and in some cases worst.

I now tow 4 down. I used a master tow dolly for many years. It is not near as bad as some people a saying. If a different car needed it I would go back to a dolly. Towing 4 down is not worth buying a new car, but if you need a new car consider getting that can be towed 4 down.

Downshift a gas MH on a down grade. That is my idea of compression braking. My Workhorse has a setting that it will do the when the brakes are used.

Getting back to the post, there has been a "rule of thumb" posted on this form several times that if your coach weights less than 100 pounds per horsepower you will be OK. I prefer 90 pounds per HP. My present gas MH and toad are at 83 pounds per HP. 28000 pounds/ 340 HP.

Sorry folks, I did not say torque was not a major component to engine performance. As was shown by the equation, horsepower = torque X rpm /5252. The more torque you have the more HP you have. Also the higher rpm equals more HP. A engine running at 2000 RPM and 300 foot pounds of torque has the same HP as a engine running at 1000 RPM and 600 foot pounds of torque. But it power vs. load that determines how fast things get done. In the case of a MH it is HP vs. weight. Again I designed engines for 35 years so I do have some experience in this field. I am sorry for what a sales person may have told some of you about torque. In the real world do you hear people at NASCAR or a drag strip talk about HP or torque. Why can a KIA Soul accelerate faster than a loaded Semi, which has 8 or 10 times the torque? If you have more interest there are several sites you can "goggle". one of them is" Horsepower design equation formula calculator". Please note that the inputs on all these sites is HP and weight and they talk about all different weight vehicles, not just cars.
