RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

I think Reese is what you are describing. Many people complain about chucking with the Reese though. The B&W rides a lot better.
I have a Reese. No problem with chucking, perhaps other users have had them installed in the wrong place in their truck bed.
B&W doesn't make suspension hitches to combat chucking. It's a solid mount hitch, same as Reese.
I think if I experienced chucking I'd invest in upgrading the truck's suspension instead of an air ride hitch.

RE: So what's your take on this article?

The author wrangles a lot with the "stigma" of trailer parks. When in truth there are parks where the "trailers" are a million bucks.
And she promotes the attitude the atmosphere in the parks is all warm and fuzzy. I'd describe it more as social interaction with the appropriate amount of feuds and grudges. Still better than loneliness and isolation.
She's trying to paint the picture with too broad of a brush.
I've spent the last 8 winters in one of these parks. One day I'll loose the 5er for one of the permanent park models.
As I mature I seem to loose my desire to impress or the need to invest. When I finally sell the properties I own I'll not purchase real estate again.

RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

My rbw lil rocker does that but it doesn't push jaws open. It has a slide bar that is held open with a dawg. When the pin moves the dawg out of the way the slide bar closes. There is no other pining required.
My HiJacker has a slide bar too. But I pull the handle and twist it up to engage the dawg. When the trailers' pin hits home the bar slides shut. Not like it used too though. It's 10 years od. I need to pressure wash the old grease out of it and use some slip plate on it.

RE: From a Class A to a 5th wheel

espresso..........use a soccer ball placed under the slide cover. Remember to push it out before retracting the slide.
Lakeside
I would think a beach ball would be better because it wouldn't damage the camper when I forgot it.

RE: Thank You

Hi, I just joined your forum today but have been following it for months. Six months ago my wife and decided that we want to spend some of our winter months touring southern USA when I retire in a year or two. I knew nothing about Rving, fifth wheels, GVWR, GCWR, GAWR, pin weight, tow vehicles, etc. I couldn't distinguish between a good quality and poor quality 5er. But over the last six months, I've read thousands of articles on trucks, campgrounds, fifth wheels manufacturers, tire manufacturers, driving tips, etc. I've learned a TON of information from people like yourselves who have already experienced all this. Nothing like learning from someone else's experiences.
I have learned that I need to upgrade my 1/2 ton, to a one-ton diesel (for the trailer we want). I learned that not all fifth wheels are created equally. (We are currently leaning towards brands like Artic Fox, Excel, Hitchhiker and Komfort). While I still have lots to learn, such as what type of frames and trailer axles are best suited for a 14,000 pound trailer, I am slowly learning enough to become an informed consumer. I just wanted to thank everyone here for all their posts and the assistance they give to newbies such as myself.

Gosh! I wish We'd done it that way! We just bought an old camper and headed for Texas. When we got there we had no clue about how to deploy our awning. We had to get help from fellow campers.
That's one of the nicer things about camping. Folks are eager to help.

RE: Where What When

Only 6 months? It took us a couple of years exploring those "Nice place to visit-wouldn't want to live there" areas.
Then we settled into a routine of frequenting our favorites. And purchased our ideal camper.

RE: Brands of Diesel fuel?

Gas stations are required to test their tanks for condensation. A local station put that task on the night manager who just signed off on it without testing. They destroyed several car engines and never paid a dime.
Unlike cars diesels have better filters, water separators and "water in fuel" indicators. Proper operation and maintenance of these filters should save your engine from getting a bad batch of fuel.

RE: Advise about towing ?

What kind of bike weighs 1,000lbs?
I'd say you're pushing the limits of the Toyota with a 5er. Those weight limits are maximum. As if you were going to crawl to the local campground a couple of times a year.

RE: Too old to continue traveling ? Grown children urging ..

We're living longer than previous generations. We need to set the example on how to enjoy those extra years. Part of that is knowing when to move on.
Yesterday on my DW's 56th birthday she confided in me she would stop driving. She is blind. I admire her courage.
Decisions like that are all personal and individualized. Not based on a number. Demonstrate you're capable of making your own decisions. Start something new. My goal is to learn to communicate on Facebook. I'm 66 and am the oldest in a family of 30 something. I have a responsibility to all of them to show them a promising future.

RE: When do snowbirds go south ?

We've been snowbirds for 10 years.
The first year we left right after New Years.
The next six years right after Thanksgiving.
The last couple of years we scratched Halloween off of the calendar.
We're working it down to our ideal schedule of Labor day to Memorial day.
We see the winter holidays as more for immediate family. We have family & friends cookouts thru the summer with a huge celebration for the 4th of July.
Counting all the people who show up on the 4th I'm thinking; "If we bought Christmas presents for all these people, we couldn't afford to snowbird!:)

RE: Multi Zone Thermostat and 2 ACs on 30 amp service

The 30/50 amp dogbone adaptor works as a fuse. It'll catch fire before the wiring in your 50 amp camper. It won't save your A/C trying to work on an overloaded circuit. Even if you test the amperage when you plug in, when the afternoon comes and all the A/C's in the park are working the amps will drop.
50 amp service is TWO 50 amp circuits. 30 amp service is less than a third of that. I wouldn't run even one A/C on a 30 amp circuit even if I was using no other electric. Amperage drop is death to induction run electric motors. I'm an A/C technician and could change out a compressor myself, but choose not to risk it. I prefer a little more margin of safety. Most campers are built to such minimal specifications. (OK, except for Teton who installed Square D circuit breakers) JMHO

RE: Why snowbird vs full-time?

We're "full-time-snowbirds" too. Two years ago when we returned to our apartment in Ohio my DW said "Why don't we just stay in the camper?" We have full hook-ups on our property. So we let the kids keep staying in the apartment.
When nomads show up at the campground in Ft. Myers I don't even attempt to remember their names. If they're there for the winter I invite them out on the bike & kayak trails. I prefer to do my exploring a little closer to nature than behind a steering wheel.

RE: Sell the house or not?

We kept the house to rent it out. Then "camp" on the property in our 5er 7 to 8 months out of the year while I work. Then we leave for Florida.
We actually have 3 tenements. We just kept every house we ever bought. We're going to sell them when the housing market recovers. But for now the rent coming in is pretty nice.

RE: Too Early to Start Thinking???

we have some debt to get out of the way, build up more equity in the home before we can sell and continue to add to the retirement accounts.
It looks like you're already past the "beginning-to-plan" stage and well into implementing some of those plans.

RE: Gulf Coast Fla. Recommendations

No see-ums are a fact of nature around here like the wind and tides.
Five years at IBE and I have been bitten by one mosquito in all that time -- and no no-seeums.
I was tent camping on Picinc Island, off of Sanibel. We just grabbed our tents and went around the island to where we caught an off shore breeze. TaDa! No more bugs! I didn't want to imply bugs were a bother, just that they were here. I've kayaked all 190 miles of kayak trails in Lee county and have the same total for mosquito bites as you do...one.
BTW, I biked thru your campground. Maybe you saw me, bald guy on a red bicycle wearing an orange safety vest. Nice campground.

RE: Gator Pizza!

Here in Ft. Myers to help celebrate FGCU's upcoming basketbll game with the FSU 'Gators" they're offering Gator pizza.
Glad to hear you are having a good time, but I did want to correct you one thing so you don't make the same mistake in person down there. It is the UF gators, not the FSU gators. I hope that FGCU can keep their run going.
Oops! Thanks.

It's easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm for the local University entry into the "sweet 16" tournament.
It seems like the whole nation is looking toward Ft. Myers this week. It has to be beneficial for everyone here.

RE: Need Height

Some have a straight roofline with 8' ceilings throughout like this one from Doubletree. doubletree rv
That being said, Winnebago now makes a classA with 8' ceilings.
Now if they could raise the doors & window headers.
