RE: Hybrid trailer length
Thanks everyone. My goal is to be able to store this in our driveway, so the length of it closed will be the determining factor of which one we purchase. I started looking at the specs of different "known to me" hybrid trailer floor plans and in those specs, the length is listed. Looking forward to finding an RV show to see different models to compare.
Hybrid trailer length
When looking at used hybrid trailers, if someone posts that the trailer is a 21 foot hybrid, does that number include the hitch or just the box? When we bought our popup new, it was based on the box length, so just trying to understand what length we should be looking at.
2WD 2012 Honda Pilot as tow vehicle
I am interested in seeing pics and/or hearing from folks who are using a 2WD Honda Pilot to tow a hybrid or travel trailer. I already know many won't think that is possible or safe, but ran in to the same issue in 2006 when I purchased our Rockwood popup and set up our 2002 Honda Odyssey van to tow (with the advice of Andy Thomson from Canada). We have successfully used our van to tow our popup up and down mountain passes through the northwest US and BC and hardly felt like we were pulling anything! We are now retiring this van that has lots of miles on it and have a brand new 2WD Honda Pilot that spec wise is very similar to our Oddy. We are selling our pop-up and will be looking to purchase a Hybrid or TT, but am looking for advice on what weight/length we should be looking at. Would love to see some pics of set ups of 2WD Honda Pilots towing either hybrids or TT.
Thank you.
RE: Hybrid Travel Trailers vs. Travel Trailers
We just got back from camping with a group of families that we have camped with for years. One of our family's sold their popup and bought a Roo. We really liked it, except it will be too heavy for us to tow. Their Rockwood "Roo" had beds that looked like a pop-up bed ends, but folded up.
Question: When we look at Hybrid Trailers, are all Hybrid Trailers with this style of bed end that folds up rather than pushes in? As we get older, I notice we are liking less and less how we have to pull out the bed ends on our popup and then lift up in order to get the supports in them. I am wondering if this will be the same with the Hybrid? I don't recall seeing any supports under the Roo bed ends, but also wasn't looking for them at the time.
RE: Hybrid Travel Trailers vs. Travel Trailers
This one looks great! Thanks for sharing the picture and floor plan.
We bought our 2006 Rockwood popup new and are now looking to sell it and either buy a hybrid travel trailer or a travel trailer. I have some questions and am hoping some of you will offer up your advice/opinions, etc.
1. Do hybrid trailers always have canvas beds that slide or fold in? Are they ever hard-sided?
2. Do travel trailers have slide outs like hybrids?
3. Can you recommend any hybrids or trailers that are lightweight, no more than 5,000 lb. loaded an no more than 23 feet long?
Thank you for your help,
I just ordered one of these. It is a KZ spree 16rbt, weights just under 2400lbs.

roof adjustment on Rockwood pop-up
We have a Rockwood pop-up that we had the roof adjusted 2 years ago because it would not crank up up with electric lift, high enough to fit the door in easily when setting up. It needs to be adjusted again, but I got to thinking that we have only been out 4 camping trips since that adjustment. My two questions are as follows:
1. Is this normal that the roof would need adjusting again after 2 seasons?
2. Is this something that we can learn to do ourselves?
Thank you,
RE: Weight Distribution Hitch and Honda Pilot
We would purchase the Honda Pilot 2WD v6. Does that change anything in your reply? Thank you.
You can't tow more than 2,000 pounds with the 2WD Pilot, and no modification will raise that limit. (see specs I posted earlier)
Your trailer weighs several hundred pounds more than that bone dry, and a thousand pounds more if at its fully loaded weight limit.
Yes, we would modify the Pilot much like we had to modify our Odyssey and did not go with Honda's tow package. We would do the same with this Pilot 2WD. Just wanted to get confirmation that it can be done with the Pilot 2WD too. Thanks.
RE: Weight Distribution Hitch and Honda Pilot
My current tow vehicle is a Honda Odyssey Van all set up with a WD Hitch, transmission/power steering cooler, Prodigy electric brakes, etc. If we purchase the Honda Pilot, to make it a tow vehicle for our Rockwood pop-up, would we have another WD hitch installed on the Pilot and bypass Honda's hitch/tow package?
I dug a little deeper- I think the answer to your question is "no"- if the Pilot you're looking at is the 4wd model, the hitch supplied is MORE THAN sufficient for your needs. (Your Pup's about 3,000 lbs fully loaded according to this PDF)
Honda's calling their setup an "integrated hitch", which says to me that they've already designed some kind of weight distribution into the vehicle.
we are looking only at 2WD Pilots. How does that change your opinion?
See details at "Integrated hitch", about halfway down the "Exterior features" section at this 2012 Pilot Specs page.
Point is, the (4WD) Pilot comes all set up for a rig your size, so no need to bother with anything but a drawbar!

RE: Hybrid Towing SUV's.?
Just towed our Jayco X20E with our 2004 Honda Pilot last weekend for the first time, and I can say that towing the camper here in Northwest PA was a total non-event. Everything went perfectly. Gas mileage does stink granted. However, I barely felt the wind resistance and my rpm's never reached 3500 even on grades. I couldnt have been happier with the Pilot's performance. Honestly I feel that this was a smoother tow than my old popup. I use a reese wdh with sway control and primus brake controller. Cant wait to get her out again!!! Just my .02.
Is your Honda Pilot a 2WD?
Towing with Honda Pilot 2WD
I am wondering if anyone is towing their pop-up trailer with a Honda Pilot 2WD vehicle? My Honda Odyssey has been an excellent tow vehicle with it's WD hitch, Prodigy brake controller etc. I am concerned that the specs on the Honda Pilot 2WD are not as good as the Odyssey. Looking at the 2012 Honda Pilot manual, it states that the 2WD model max tow is 2,000 lb. unless we add the optional ATF cooler which bumps it up to about 3,100 lb. for 4 people in the vehicle. The GVWR of the pop-up is 3072.
We were all set to go purchase the Pilot this weekend with all the great deals since it is a holiday weekend, but now I am concerned it won't be able to cut the mustard like our Odyssey which zipped up mountain passes.
Thank you.
