RE: Reserve America $59.95 charge

Just went through the process for a NC State Park and did not have anything like what others mentioned. For those that are getting the thing on theirs, are you being charged a reservation fee? We get charged $6 per reservation. Maybe that is a way for them to recoup costs? Maybe they have an agreement with certain states to do that or something. Just throwing out ideas.

RE: Truck or SUV recommendations

How often are you going to uise the tow vehicle? Is it going to be a daily driver? How often are you going to take the TT out? How far away are you planning to take it?
I see that you just registered online and have no idea what your experience is with campers. I can offer some suggestions from my experience and owning a 31' bunkhouse (35' total length).
First qestion about selecting a trailer, would be how many people will be camping in it? Most of the time. Not when little suzy may bring a friend or two, but when you go out the majority of the time.
What type of camping will you be doing the most? Full hook ups (water/electric/sewage)? Dry camping with no hook ups? Water/electric only?
The reason I ask these questions is from experience. When we bought our camper, we were planning on full hook ups. Resort type camping. At the least, we would go to the state park with only water and electric. Never planned on dry camping and our camper was not really set up for that. We've had it 3 years and in the last year, we had started to get the urge to do some dry camping. We are fortunate to live at the foothills of the NC mountains and there are some great places to go and dry camp. Like on the Blue Ridge Parkway for example. But we have two issues. One, we can not get our camper in many of the places on the parkway. If you were under 29' or 25' (even better), then it would be easier. One of the places we liked that we could fit in a few spots was Julian Price. But most of the spots we might fit in were kind you just pulled over to the side and our slides would extend out within a couple feet of the road. We didn't like that idea. We would prefer a spot that we could back into, but with the size of our camper it would not be as easy to find a spot to do. Our second issue was we are not really set up for dry camping. Sure, we could do it. but we might as well be in a tent. We only had one battery (and that would need to be upgraded), we have no 12 volt outlets for something like a breeze fan and we only had one vent fan in the entire camper and that is in the bathroom. So we would have to do some alterations and/or rigging to get where we want to be.
We ended up taking the TT and put in storage at a campground at Myrtle Beach. We don't have to tow it and they put it on and take it off site for us. The cost is pretty close to the cost of storing it in storage in our hometown. We then went and spent a couple thousand on a used pop up camper. We haven't been able to get it out yet, but hopefully in another couple weeks or so. It's pais for in full and is better inclined for dry camping. We also traded in our F250 on a Ford Explorer. We don't feel as guilty driving it around as we did the F250. It can tow the pop up and our utlity trailer if needed as well.
Just some food for thought. Seriously think what your needs are, what your wants are and then be ready for those ideas to change. If a family member or friend asked my advice, I would tell them to go with the smallest they can deal with, use it for a year or two and then take a look at it again and see what you want or could do differently.

RE: Highways Magazine

QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you don't subscribe you get 4 issues a year FREE.
If you subscribe (I do) you get your subscription "adjusted".
Can someone in the know (Marcus team) explain that to me. Is my yearly subscription to Motorhome going to get exteded 4 months EACH year or just in 2014.
IS a subscriber getting 16 months of the magazine for 12 months price, or is this a 2014 "adjustment" only and then tough cookies?
This sounds a whole lot like fuel prices......Unleaded is at $2.00/gal. Companies want it at $2.50/gal so they run the price up to $3.00/gal., people scream and kick, price goes down to $2.50/gal and people are dancing in the street thinking they are getting a steal. Process repeates until we are at nearly $4.00/gal. I am getting the same gut feeling with GS club and their "benefits"...whats next on the chopping block.
You may get two issues of the smae month for those 4 times. I had a subscription for TL and when I went to an RV show, they gave you a 6 month subscription. For those 6 months, I received 2 copies. Gave one to a coworker.
Question for you, would rather not subscribe to the magazine at all and only get the 4 copies per year included in your GS membership? You would be ok not receiving the other 8 months? Not sure if they do it , but maybe a discounted subscription rate for members for the yearly subscription. Maybe they do it, I don't know. The last time I subscribed, I did it for 2 years and it cost me less than $6 total I believe. Anyone know of those deals out there again? lol

RE: Highways Magazine

I will make sure we get this right and each one of you who are having trouble will be contacted.
I sent Mike Siemens a PM last week letting him know I was receiving the error message as well. No response. Just tried submitting my choice again and still am getting the same error message.

RE: Trailer Life Magazine

If I read Mike Siemens posting about the Highways magazine, Good Sam members will receive 4 issues of trailer life or motorhome magazine (you choose one or the other) each year while they are a member. Those issues will be the ones with the Highways insertion in them.
At least that is how I understood it.

RE: Our new camping spot

For no hookups and no services (potty), I would be more incline to maybe $5-7. And just because you think they have better things to do (planning), don't think it will come back to bite you in the butt, because it most definitely will. Get it in writing that you are legal, with everyone. I would up the day use parking to at least $2-3 a day.

RE: RV shopping.....loss of deposit?!

OP still hasn't given a clear reason for backing out.
I'm the OP....-just in case anyone is following....we have purchased the unit. once we intended to sever the deal, the dealership really made an attempt to keep us as a buyer.
As some insinuated, we did NOT just change our mind. The negotiations enabled us to make a satisfactory purchase.
Bought from Tom Johnson huh?

RE: T.T. tounge jack

Thank you everyone.
Only one mentioned about the 24in. instead of the 18in. any other thought's on that.
Also I can't totally understand my weight sticker, should it specify tounge weight?
One mentioned in a PM about installing a cut out switch,,,,, thought's?
Mike
Go with a 24" if you are able to. Better to have the extra 6" and not need it.

RE: T.T. tounge jack

The Barker VIP 3500 electric tongue jack was the best thing we bought. But our camper is 35' long in total length and has a GWR of 11,000lbs.
We bought ours online at AdventureRV.net. It was easy to install. Basically hook up the trailer to the TV and remove the 3 bolts holding on the old jack. Remove old jack and install the Barker with 3 bolts. There's a wire that has a raw end. I guess the hardest part was buying a connector for the raw wire that fits over the post of the batter and clamping it down.

I don't think I know of even one company that makes you PAY to use their website. :R
You're kidding right? You don't think there are other membership websites out there?

RE: Maggie Valley NC

We must be missing part of Maggie Valley. The several times we have driven through on our way to Cherokee, we did not see anything worthwhile or feel that it would be a place to stop. Is there more to it than Highway 19 going through it?

RE: North Carolina natives

I too spent the first 18 years of my life in Greensboro ........Went in the Navy and only go back to see family and friends......Why does NC only have 5 state parks with campgrounds in the whole state...
Where do you get only 5 state parks have campgrounds? There's more than that. And theres plenty more with primitive camp sites.

RE: How do I find a dealer with a specific TT?

Disregard, I saw a drawing of the two twin beds up front. Did a nationwide search of that model on RV trader and only 7 hits came in. All with the queen bed.

What is the twin bed option? Twin bed up front instead of the queen or double twin beds in the bunkhouse area?

RE: reservation system?

I agree with dodgerdog....if you are online already (accessing the GS website) and do not see the information you want, then just do a search with your favorite search engine. Or if you see an email address and it ends in something like "interlakervpark.com", that gives a pretty good indication that their website address will be "www.nterlakervpark.com".

RE: The Giant Marketing Monster

While I received the same thing and every once in a while receive other marketing items, I don't fin myself "inundated" with them. I look to see if what it is. If i'm interested, I read it. If not I throw it away with all the other junk mail that we receive daily. 9 times out of 10, you can tell what something is by the outside envelope.
TIP: Save that CW/GS junk mail and use as a fire starter the next time you go camping. :)
