How many out there in Class C's have families?

We are a family of 5, kids ages 8, 5 and almost 2. We are planning on getting some sort of rv/travel trailer for next camping season and have been doing lots of research on all the options. How smart is a Class C for families? I worry about the seat belts first and foremost. I really can't see just letting everyone roam the rv while driving? Because they are much more expensive than TT's, we would be looking at something in the early 2000's, maybe in the $25-30K price range. The shorter the better, bunks would be nice but they look to be rare for that vintage? Am I correct? And I'm thinking the seat belt situation for that vintage isn't great either? Anyways, if there are folks out there using a Class C with small kids, tell me about it!
We also have a Toyota Prius that we could potentially tow as well, if it's even possible with a smaller, or up to say 30' or so, Class C?
Or would we be better off staying with a travel trailer? The only issue with that is we are very undecisive about a tow vehicle. DH and I have been going back and forth about it for months now and it's become exhausting, lol. We currently own 2 vehicles, an '08 Caravan which we just acquired and my husband uses the Prius for commuting. I keep revisiting the Class C option, but I just wonder if it makes sense or is safe.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

RE: Double bunk bed layouts

We are strongly considering the Jayco Whitehawk 28DSBH which has a double bed bunk. We thought the mattresses and the whole set up seemed high quality and I like how the corner isn't cut but rather rounded. They seemed very roomy.

Jayco Jay Flight vs. Jayco Whitehawk

Similar floorplans and similar enough weights/lengths..... which would you choose and why?
Thank you :)
ETA: Forgot... in Jayco brochures/online, they give "Ext. Length" numbers. Are they measuring just the box or the tongue also?

RE: Jayco White Hawk?

I bought my White Hawk 28DBSH in May and LOVE it. This was our first TT so we took our time and looked at all the different models. The kids love the double bunk beds. We've used it several time this summer and our longest trip was from Michigan to Tennessee. It handled well on the highway. There is plenty of room to access the restrooms, beds and refridgerator when the slide out is closed. The only add on I should have done before I pulled it off the lot is add a slide topper to the slide out. http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t417/jcooling703/TruckandTrailer.jpg
Good to hear! How many kids do you have? We have 3, but I'm imagining the boys sleeping together on the bottom. The double bunks in this model seem quite larger than other double bunk models. And they don't have that "cut out" section.

RE: Jayco White Hawk?

to be perfectly honest. the first dealer you went seems PERFECT. If they told you to go and look around, find the one you like and come back in. That's exactly the way I want to be treated.
I HATE with a passion to be escorted from TT to TT, and have to have each one unlocked. Like they don't trust me. I love just taking my time and exploring. We have a dealer like that here. "Most" of us avoid them. In fact. The TT I just bought, came NOT from them.
As for the White Hawk 280BH A very nice TT, Good Floor plan, Kind of heavy though. The one here is 5850lbs sitting on the lot.
Unfortunately, we got the "cold shoulder" after we came in from checking out all the trailers again. No greetings from anyone. We actually liked being taken from trailer to trailer with a salesman. They were unlocked and the kids were able to go up first and open the door and check it out. It was nice to have someone there to ask a question if needed or point us in the direction of others that we maybe wouldn't have considered. I also thought it was fine to be sent out on our own to explore, but when they didn't initiate any communication after that, we will definitely take them off our list.

Jayco White Hawk?

We FINALLY went out looking at trailers today. It was a blast and it feels so good to actually see in person what I've been obsessed over the past several months, lol. We went to one RV dealership and they barely blinked an eye at us.... no questions about what we were after in a TT....nothing. Just was told that we can go out in the lot and check them out. Didn't find much and was more or less put off by their UN helpfulness. Went to the next one and they were great. I primarily went to check out the Salem 26TBUD, but they had *just* sold it a couple days ago. My favorite of the day was the Jayco White Hawk 28DSBH. They also had a few Pumas. The fit and finish of the Jayco seemed nicer to me. The double bed size bunk was very nice. Anyone have the 28DSBH or another White Hawk model? How do you like it? Thanks!

Salem 26TBUD thoughts....

We are probably going to check one out this week. If you have one, tell me what you love (and don't love) about it. (I'm loving the short length, but still have 3 separate beds and what looks to be very large outdoor (thru and thru)storage) Also, I can't find anywhere the specs for the queen bed....is is the 60x74 or 80"...anyone know? Lastly, how is the storage? I see it also lacks some counter space. If you have kids, what age of child do you put in the bottom bunk? Ours are 8, 5 and 1 so I'm assuming it will be nice for the youngest. Do you find it tows easy? Is it a desirable size for state parks?
Do you mind sharing what you paid? I really love the price point for a new TT. The one that we are looking at is priced at $17,900 online. I'm assuming some negotiation will play into it. I've seen them as low as about $16K for new.
Lastly....what are you towing it with and how large is your family?
Thanks!

RE: 2 2500 'burbs in our radar....which one would you choose?

Thank you guys! We're still looking and have contacting the party with the '06. I think DH is still kicking around the idea (and I had forgotten that he actually wanted to do this) that he would like to find something in that year range (02-6)BUT, he would prefer to find something from down south. (like B.O. was referring to) His father lives in AK and I hadn't realized he's been looking there. Could visit family and pick up truck at the same time. The guy with this '06 3 hours away is willing to meet about an hour or so away since he'll be up that direction. Unfortunately, that will be DH's number 3 or 4 nights working :/ We'll see what pops up. Thanks for the thoughts!
If your looking at Alaska, Cal Worthington Ford has I believe a 2002 2500 Suburban 8.1 combo for sale for 8900. I called about it, and I was told it had the leather trimming etc. It just came in on trade, so you may want to have your father-in-law take a peek at it.
Oh, man. I said "AK"....I really meant AR, ARKANSAS! *slaps palm on head* Sorry about that! But yes, if anyone sees anything in that area, definitely let me know. Fayetteville....Fort Smith....Little Rock....anything around there.

RE: 2 2500 'burbs in our radar....which one would you choose?

Ok guys...so what is the general consensus on the '06 6.0 4 sp. 3.73 rear diff? Should I have DH call on it when he gets home, or keep looking at the 8.1s. We would be looking at a TT in the 28-33'....as far as weights, probably in the 6K range. It definitely looks like a nice truck.

BenK...the '06 is actually the private party one, the '02 8.1 is from a dealer.
DH is definitely a DIY'er, or at least a HAGFWIAMDIFU'er (Translation: Have A Good Friend Who Is A Mechanic Do It For Us'er .... :) )

More info....
Didn't catch this the first time, but the '06 also comes with the extra middle 3/4 (or whatever you call them) original bench seat. He had put the second row buckets in after he purchased it in '08.
And again, this '06 is the 6.0... 4 sp.... 3.73 rear diff.

RE: A few of scenarios from me...again :/

lol, no more tents for us anymore.
I don't care for the safety/seat belting aspect of the Class C, although don't think I haven't checked them out!
DH is actually an auto mechanic by trade, although he's 38 and hasn't been doing it in quite some time so he would be more comfortable working with an older GM rather than newer from experience. We owned a NAPA store for 6 years and he has excellent connections as far as friends who mechanics/body guys and shops to utilize. We are very fortunate for that!
I think DH is definitely on board with buying an older one vs. having a large vehicle payment. I'm not sure we've ever had a car payment. That might come as too much of a shock to him, ha!

RE: 2 2500 'burbs in our radar....which one would you choose?

The 'o6 looks to be owned by a gentlemen who is VERY meticulous about maintenance and upkeep. Has detailed records to prove it. The '02 is a used dealer truck, but they state that it's in very nice condition, etc. Too bad they are 3 hours away in opposite directions, lol!
The 4 buckets being a deal breaker....you mean in the good or bad way? I'm assuming 2 benches is ideal?

RE: 2 2500 'burbs in our radar....which one would you choose?

Ok, the 2006 is the 6.0 and the 2002 says "8 cy. Vortec 8100" which I can only assume it's the 8.1.
Remember though that is could potentially be my DD and we don't plan to haul a 35ft.+ TT. So if the 6.0 is fine and a lot better on FE and overall maintenance than the 8.1, we may take that into consideration. But if it's a******shoot, well....

2 2500 'burbs in our radar....which one would you choose?

2006 2500 Suburban LT 4x4
105K miles
For the sake of details, this one is pewter in color with tan leather and has the quad bucket seating (this style takes away one passenger space, am I correct? Compared to 2 bench rows? Which is better with kids?)
Asking $17500
Private party on CL
2002 2500 Suburban LT 4x4
106K miles
Details, this one is black with gray leather/moon roof and has the 2 bench rows.
Asking $12,950
This one is a dealer listed on CL
Both appear to be in nice condition inside and out (from pictures anyways) and both are about 3 hours away from us.
A woman should never get this happy about finding 2500 'burbs ;) There has to be something wrong with me! And you guys might be on to something about keeping our old Caravan and getting a used 'burb. Or I guess just using the 'burb as my DD. Let's hope DH is as thrilled with my finds as I am!
