Email viruses are epidemic and exasperating as we all know.

Forum members and admin are discussing the issue in Viruses (Forum Members), where you are welcome to join us.

In an attempt to gather information on members' experiences, we have put together this survey and request your participation.

Answer what you can the best you can. If you feel a question is too invasive, skip it.

Survey:

1 Do you get emails you suspect have virus attachments?

2 If you receive such emails, does the sender look like a member of Open Roads? Or from other sources?
3 If you receive such emails, can you tell what type of file it is and provide its extension (.gif, jpg, .zip, .vbs, etc)?".

4 Is your email address public in your Profile or hidden on Open Roads? Also indicate any changes in this.
5 Is your email address in your signature (please clarify if full address or name only)?

6 What is your operating system and version?
7 What antivirus or firewall program do you use (if none, please indicate)?
8 What email program do you use?

9 Any comments or ideas? (Please keep short, or join the discussion.)

Thank you.

(On edit, sorry about the temporary confusion on question 8--I meant to add firewall to 7--should've left it alone! Thanks for emailing that to my attention, Bob (DutchStar3670).)

1 Do you get emails you suspect have virus attachments? yes

2 If you receive such emails, does the sender look like a member of Open Roads? Or from other sources?
I'm not sure
3 If you receive such emails, can you tell what type of file it is and provide its extension (.gif, jpg, .zip, .vbs, etc)?".
Not sure. Anything that doesn't let me see what kind of file it involves I delete immediately. Anything the least bit suspect also gets deleted. I might be missing out on information, but I am also missing out on virus troubles.

4 Is your email address public in your Profile or hidden on Open Roads? Also indicate any changes in this.
When I registered in April it was. About 2 months later I updated my information and removed it.
5 Is your email address in your signature (please clarify if full address or name only)? no

6 What is your operating system and version? Windows 98
7 What antivirus program do you use (if none, please indicate)? McAffee on this pc but Norton scans the entire system once a week.
8 What email or firewall program do you use?
MS Outlook Express

9 Any comments or ideas?

For those who want to take part, I suggest that you copy the survey questions before clicking on the reply button. You can then paste them into the reply. You can leave them in or erase them, but they will be there for you to read.

1 Do you get emails you suspect have virus attachments?
Yes. Depending on the virus, our system has cleansed the virus or deleted it before it reaches my mailbox. The original email, sometimes empty, is always sent and a notce from the system describing what action the system took (cleansed or deleted).

2 If you receive such emails, is or does the sender look like a member of Open Roads? Or from other sources?
The spoofed addresses are sometimes forum members but just as often from others. I've even recieved a notice that I sent myself a virus.

3 If you receive such emails, can you tell what type of file it is and provide its extension (.gif, jpg, .zip, .vbs, etc)?".
I haven't paid attention since I haven't open one if forever. Next time one comes in, I'll look at it and edit this response.

On edit: The file has a jpg extension. Although the file is now empty, it was a worm_klex.h

4 Is your email address public in your Profile or hidden on Open Roads? Also indicate any changes in this.
Yes. Except for about a week, it always has been in my profile.

5 Is your email address in your signature (please clarify if full address or name only)?
No.

6 What is your operating system and version?
I uses Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Mac 0S 8.1 Mac OS 9.1, depending on which machine I'm using. For the inquisitive mind: No, I don't own all of those machines.

7 What antivirus program do you use (if none, please indicate)?
I really don't know what the firewall is in our school system. The definitions are updated hourly. Indivual PC's use CommandCom software with updates scheduled daily. The individual machines software is to protect from viruses that might come in on floppy diskettes. We don't think the system's firewall will allow viruses either in or out.

On edit: The part of our firewall that handles email is InterScan E-mail VirsuWall NT

8 What email program do you use?
Lotus Notes at school. A Web browser at home.

9 Any comments or ideas? (Please keep short, or join the discussion.)
If more people used Macs, there would be fewer PC viruses going around. Sorry, I had to say that for Pat.

Tom

I also get the infected e-mails occasionally on my private e-mail which has never been published on this or any other forum. I have however used it to contact members of this forum so it could be in their address book. Also keep in mind that we are in a much larger database in the motorcycle forum as you already know.
