We have a friend who would like to put an awning of some type on her Starcraft Venture truck camper (On the back, over the door). Who has what and what are your suggestions? For our Memorial day outing my husband is trying to rig one up for her using a tarp and old tent poles.

Mine is a Truckin' Awning by Carefree of Colorado. Do a web search and you should be able to find their website. It works well and I leave it out full time when camping as it is basically just large enough to keep the doorway dry.

The awning over the camper door is one of those things that may give one bragging rights or something. I would like to know what is the actual practical reason for it. If there is one, please let me know, so I can justify getting one as well. My wife's been nagging me about it. Personally I would rather replace the side awning with a powered one, and to top the Joneses, have it automatically retract in the event of strong winds.

I'll try to answer that. To throw shade on the camper.

I used my rear awning the other day at the beach and loved it. First, it put some shade out there to help read and relax and second when you were in the camper it just added a more spacious feeling. I know its an optical illusion but sure 'felt' like a bigger camper.

I attached 7' of awning rail just under the edge of the roof on my old slide in and had a piece of 8 x 10 awning material I would slide in the rail once everything was set up. A couple of 10' extendable tent poles and a few yards of rope tightened everything up. It's a real handy item if it's raining, gives you a bit of dry area and when the sun a beatin on you, well there's your shade.

Sutak,

I just finished horse camping for a week in KY dring all the thunderstorms.....The rear awning was invaluable to me. I kept a pair of rubber boots on the rear generator cover and sat on the doorway and put on my boots prior to leaving the camper. The awning kept me and the boots dry while I put them on.....In other words, besides shade the rear awning allows you to have a dry area right outside the door.....Will come in handy if you run into the weather that I had!!

We have rear awing. Last summer while it was raining we left the door open and enjoyed what otherwise would have been a "cooped up" day.
