Has anyone tried out this system yet?...http://www.lowrance.com/Automotive/Products/iWAY500C.asp
...It's kinda new, but Lowrance has been keeping the airplanes and boats out of trouble for years...Seems to have a lot of nice features...

I've never tried that product, so I can give you any information. I have looked at a number of the units several years ago, and decided that due to their costs, I would buy a laptop and a cheaper GPS. Well with the laptop, there is no problem with seeing the route, I can update the map easily, so I don't get stuck with the upgrade costs from the manufacturer.

I use a Garman 72 GPS with an IBM laptop and Delorme software. I also can say that at work I have a Lowrance GPS with a Dell laptop and Delorme software. Either GPS works good with either computer, and I would say the best part is the Delorme software. It's inexpensive and I update it about every other year for about $40.

And by the way, when I'm not on the road using the GPS, I can use the laptop to type this reply. I think independent components are the way to go.

It looks quite simalr to the Garmin 2620 I just purchased. I couldn't find the actual selling price, or anyone selling the Lowrance iway 500.
I got the 2620 for $850 at newegg.com if it will help in your decision.

I've got a laptop with the DeLorme software and gps, but I was looking for something a little smaller and portable...The Garmon ones are nice also, but I like the size of the screen on the Lowrance....I can see it a little better...(need reading glasses for close-up)...It can also be transfered to the toad if needed.....

Gecko,
I recently purchased a Lowrance iFinder H20 plus. It's a handheld unit and came with mapping software. We also have a laptop with Delorme S&T but is bulky so we went with the handheld. Used it twice now on trips and also on the boat. We really like it!

I used their X-15 in my boat and truck. I was reliable, but the maps were somewhat obsolete. This appears to be quite different. On the X-15 you had to transfer the map sections you wanted to use from a CD-ROM to a memory card. It had no route planning. There was no verbal directions either.

Posted earlier with no replies -- any advice on the Pioneer AVIC-N1 would be appreciated.

Anyone have experience the Pioneer AVIC-N1 in-dash navigation system? Currently use a Laptop with Street Atlas. Before we spend 2K on the Pioneer, we are researching alternatives. Thanks in advance.

I have the iway500C and it works very well. I looked at megellan 700 and garmin 2620. I am sure they both work as well but the large screen on the lowrance , 5" compared with 3" on the other 2 was what sold us. It does have a very large hard drive , 10 gig for maps and 10 gig for mp3 files. It has everything ready to use right away. Very nice base and external antenna. So far we love this one. Got it from bassword so if it did not work well we could take it back without any problem. Think its a keeper!
