Nope! Can't see either one!
This goes around every year.
Mars was at its closest to the Earth in 2003 and the difference between the distance then and the distance during a close opposition (when the Earth and Mars are closest in their orbital swing around the sun) was so small that you'd never have noticed any difference.
The reference to the size of the moon was in reference to looking at Mars though a telescope at 100x and not to the naked eye.

Thanks but I don't think there was any auroral thing going on just low moving clouds with a 280 second exposure. I think we are still to far south (@an hour north of Detroit) for that type of sighting.
