Dixie Flyer wrote: I want you to meet the next Old Fella
Tomorrow will be two weeks since Charlie has come to live with us. We have been blessed to have such an animal as he. He hasn't been a problem since his arrival, he has acted as if he has lived here all of his life. He loved the camping trip to Devil's Fork and we certainly enjoyed him.
Sue and I just drove out to the property to see the work that is going on and you can see the progress that is being made. I told Charlie he had some big paws to fill, but I think he is up to it. Charlie will be coming with us to the Ohio Old Fella Rally next June to meet all the folks that will be there, I know you will love him just as much as Sue and I do.
The memorial is coming along and I hope we will be able to make some plans about what kind of memorial Fella will have for us to honor him with. If I were able I would build him the most beautiful monument there could possibly, but Sue says I had better think about the animals that still need help and what that money could do for them. I keep waiting for some break that would cause the Old Fella story to go National so the rescue effort could get the boost it needs, but all in God’s time. Burke County has more today in the way of rescue than it has ever had, so I am thankful for that.

This was our Bart. He was a big boy weighing in at 117 pounds. There was never any doubt in my mind that he would defend us to the death, but he was also a gentle soul around those we introduced him to. He went to Rainbow Bridge July 1999.

I was reminded of a funny story about Bart. The phone rang one day, it was a man selling security systems. I let him ramble on for a while and then I interrupted him by saying,
“I already have the best security system money can buy.”
“Yeah,” He said, “What’s that?” he asked.
“It’s a Bart 117.” I replied.
“Never heard of it.” He replied where did you get it?” He asked.
“My daughter gave it to us.” I answered.
“It came with a guarantee that any intruder would never come back if he escaped.” I continued.”
“I never heard of any system with that guarantee” the man continued, where can I find something like that he asked.
“My system is a Doberman Pinscher named Bart that weighs 117 pounds.” I concluded.
With that the salesman hung up the phone.
Too funny Richard, and so true, reminds me our long haired silver tip German Shephard, Sam. He lived in the house with us, all our neighbor's homes had been broken into in a period of about 1 month. The police came to our door one evening to ask is we had seen a man walking through the park (beside us) around 2:00 pm, we replied no, we were at work, only one home was Sam, our dog. He looked at Sam, then replied, yeah he would deter any potential robber, robbers like easy entry, no noise or potential problems. Sam was 140 lbs at the time, not fat just big, friendly unless he suspected an intruder. When he ruffled his neck hair and showed his teeth, he looked vicious. Our house was never robbed, this was a nice neighborhood and the robbers collected lots of good items I know. After about a month they obviously moved on, we never did find out if the robber was caught. Our fear at the time is they would might harm Sam to make the robbery, thankfully that did not happen. Sam passed away of old age a few years later, he truly was a very loving loyal dog. Our 1 year old grandson, could do anything with Sam, would use Sam as a pillow, they would both snooze on the living room floor. We have a picture of Sam hanging in our fifth wheel which is now our home and he passed away in 2000. Oh yes, Sam was a resue dog, he was such an awesome dog.

Richard....I just read your tribute to Old Fella in the Waiting at the Rainbow Bridge area and it brought tears to my eyes again. You truly have a gift with words.

You can tell them it would be good place to put a plaque in memory of Old Fella.
