Now I can talk about this since I have let time take away some of the hurt. Sue and I have a neighbor that is a single woman living in an apartment across the street from us. Several months ago she took in a puppy that was wondering the streets. He wasn't a cute puppy, kind of on the ugly side and big. Anyway, I went with her to get him as she wanted my help. He was an easy one to catch as he was friendly and was ready for a someone to take him home.
In the afternoons I would watch them play in her yard as she taught him to fetch and walk on the leash. He was a very happy puppy and soon the bald spots that covered him were gone as his coat began to look healthy. I could tell he was out growing the apartment as he began to grow, but I never expected what came next.
I knew I hadn't seen the puppy in a while, but really thought nothing about until I went to the dog pound and saw him there, it broke my heart to see the once happy playful little dog afraid and skinny in one of the holding pens. My first reaction was to go next door and give her a piece of my mind, but there doesn't seem to be enough of it to go around lately. I am so disappointed in her and wonder why she didn't ask me for help with him before giving him up. I don't know if there were problems with his behavior of just what the deal is but I really want to find out, but then it wouldn't change a thing and most likely cause a problem between me and my neighbor.
Then last night as I was getting ready to go to bed I went outside just to check on things when I heard the puppy in the other apartment complex outside playing with the English Bull dog that had chewed on his ears so bad I had to take him to the vet to have his ears operated on to clear up the hematoma that was in both ears. I did this beacuse I knew the people who owned it would not take care of the problem. It was explained why the puppies ears were swollen and filled with blood and that he was not to be allowed to play with the Bull Dog especially while the ears were healing. I lost it! I went next door and spoke my mind and told them if they couldn't take care of the puppy I was going to take it. Well I over stepped my bounds and I know it, but at least they took the puppy inside.
When we came home on Monday while I was parking the camper in the yard I watched their little boy kicking the puppy. I got out of the truck and went over to the boy shouting at him to stop kicking him. His mother came over and I talked with her about what I saw. I am afraid that puppy hasn't got a chance for a good life and will always be treated like a piece of trash. I am waiting for my chance to take the puppy before it is too late, but I don't know just how to do that. Sue and I paid the vet bill to have his ears fixed and will continue to pay for his recovery until he is well, but I just can't see why people treat animals with such cruelty and I feel I am helping them mistreat this poor puppy by paying his vet bills.
Okay, enough ranting for the morning. When I think about Old Fella and all of the animals that go through life facing hardships at the hand of those who should help it makes me angry. Charlie is a good example of someone throwing away something so precious as if it was yesterday's garbage. I have to go for now so I can get to the pound and help Sgt Mack, so I will talk with you later.

I think people who mistreat animals like that ought to get like treatment, they should not be allowed to have a pet. Rich I hope you can do something for the pup before it is too late, isn;t there an animal abuse hotline? if not there should be.
God Bless

It look like Hanna may hit between Savannah and Charleston, which means we will probably get winds and hopefully some rain at Modoc.I go back to work tomorrow so do notknow how many campers we have. Will just pray for safety and rain.

Lady and Snoopy get to see the vet today, Lady as a growth on her back leg that has gotten larger, and Snoopy has ear problem that I cannot put a finger on. I used to take children to dr. now I take furkids to vet!!!!!
That is so sad. Poor animals. It makes me so sad to think of the abuse some animals and small defenseless a children have to endure. I have shed so many tears watching Animal Cops. I agree, animal abuse is against the law, it should be reported to someone. You don't have to give your name, so won't cause problems with the neighbors. Let us know what is up. And glad you feel comfortable venting to us.

Richard, sorry to hear about your experiences. I believe it often depends on how we were brought up. My brother and I were brought up to respect people and animals, as I am sure you and the people on this Forum were. Some people, however, did not get this advantage, may have been taught that animals are merely property and some may have been abused or witnessed abuse when they were young. These people may believe that such behavior is normal, and may not even understand those of us who treat our children and animals with love and respect. In addition, children who are mistreated will often react by mistreating an animal. This does not mean we should allow such behavior to continue, but ultimately we have to teach the children that this kind of behavior is not normal and break the cycle of abuse. I agree that you did the right thing in talking to your neighbors about their treatment of their animals and, if it continues, you should report it to the local authorities.

As long as we're ranting, justifiably so, I'll add another pet peeve - people who don't pick up after their pets. I always carry at least one plastic bag and pick up after my 12 pound Shih Tzu. Tonight I was carrying a bag with her leavings in it and watched a guy walk his 85 pound lab over to the median and then walk away calmly after the dog left a big dump. Part of the reason I carry more than one bag is that I pick after mine and others but I'm tired of dog owners not taking responsibility for thier pets dumping their mess on somebody else's lawn. Pet responsibility means being a good parent as well as a good citizen. Thanks for letting me rant.
I hope the abuse of the puppy stops, but it is unlikely that the poor puppy will have a good life with that family.
Did you ever find out why the lady gave up her dog to the pound?????I would confront her......dont worry about loosing that kind of neighbor......
Not to change the subject, but...I'm sad this morning. One of our beautiful 'Smoke' cats has a cancerous tumour in his nose. I'll be meeting with the oncologist Monday but it doesn't seem real good. He would require radiation and chemo and I don't think I'd want to put him through that.
Indulge me - We've had Sam for 9 years, along with his brother Shadow. We got them as 12 week old kitties, and they are a most unusual coloring - black when you look at them normally, but the remainder of the hair shaft is gray, which is called smoke. They are not only beautiful but they are the sweetest cats ever. Not a bad habit between them. We'll be hoping for the best and making more decisions after Monday.
