I like the statue of Old Fella, it's not about the money, it's about the love.

The statue will be life size and is supposed to be for outdoors as well as indoors. As some of you know a famous artist, Lee Mitchelson is painting a portrait of Fella with the intentions of hanging it in the rescue building when it is finsihed. Last night while I was attending a County Commissioner's meeting it was suggested by the head Librarian that the portrait be placed on display at the public libary so it will have better exposure and more people can learn about the Old Fella Story. It was a great idea I thought and what an honor for Fella.
I am thinking about having the memorial for Fella this spring when the park will be finished. I can have his statue in place sitting on a marble pedestal by that time. For those of you who would like to come, arrangements can be made for you to stay at Magnolia Springs State Park just down the road from Waynesboro. The memorial service would be on a Saturday morning at the new park.
Let me hear from you if your are interested in coming.

Richard - About a year ago I read this thread from beginning to end which I believe at the time was around 800 pages. Great story! I was sad to read about the pain you and your wife were going through.
I enjoyed reading about your trips and how much happiness you have brought to your animals!
You may have answered this question in a previous post but I was wondering when you took Fella back to the original campground you got him from did he remeber being there?

Yes he did. He started barking when we pulled on the road that went down to the entrance gate. When we got to the gate house he really got excited when he heard Nina's voice, he was so glad to see her.
When we got to our campsite and unhooked the camper I let him go to see if he would wander off, but he stayed with us and never left my side. When we went for our first walk he was so funny as he looked around as if he may have thought we had brought him back to leave him. Soon he realized we weren't going to leave him and he had the best time. People who knew him came by to visit and he remembered them all.

Rich that is going to be an awesome statue, wish I could send more $$ to help out on it, but now that we have aquired another dog, well, ya know how itis. Roscoe is beagle/basset mix, very friendly, wellbehaved etc.
yes Fella remembered me and remembered that I always had treats for him, and he would nose my hands and pockets until I gave him some.
he is sure missed, campers ask about Rich and sue and their new dogs etc.

Good morning everyone. Everyone here is fine and doing well. Suzie has been on her best behavior, which makes her no fun at all. I guess she is growing up and becoming a refined young lady. Peaches is doing okay but will have to have some surgery on her hip to repair some damage done when she was hit by a car some time back. I think I am going to have a second opinion however just to be on the safe side. Charlie is such a sweet boy and so easy to get along with. What a treasure he is and what a blessing to have him as part of the family.
When I look at the pictures of all three swimming in the lake on our last camping trip and see how much they are enjoying life it makes me feel good about this little corner of the world. Fella’s memorial is coming along and it looks as if I now have it all planned out. The statue is a generic one bought form a company that makes different kinds of statues of pets. They have just about every breed of dog , cat and other animals suitable for outdoor use as well as indoor. The marble slab will have to be purchased for the statue to sit on, I don’t know yet what that will cost, but will find out soon.
Workers are busy on the park getting it ready for landscaping so I hope I will know soon just where in the park the memorial will be. It’s amazing how Old Fella has touched so many lives and now that he is gone he is still being remembered. What a wonderful tribute to a once old stray dog that no one wanted. Every time I go back to the campground where he lived for five years as a stray I still look for signs of his being there. I walk the paths and the roads and look at the campsites thinking these are the places he walked and lived. I miss him so much it’s hard to believe he is gone.

Well wouldn't you know it? We may be able to get a bronze life size statue in something we can afford. The bronze would last a life time without damage.
