Gentle Spirit wrote: I discovered the Old Fella thread months ago. My husband emailed it to me because we're looking for a motorhome to travel with our dogs. I have never written in because we haven't yet gotten our motorhome but have been reading almost daily for a long time. Richard has been an inspiration for me and changed my life. Tomorrow is the 1-year anniversary of losing my beloved dog, Brandi. When reading about old fella and his physical pains, ups and downs, and his love and will to live, he reminded me of Brandi. His death was like losing Brandi all over again. I have not replaced her because I do have 2 other large dogs and we want to travel. We also have 2 cats and 2 horses. I just want to say that tomorrow I will be mailing a very important letter inspired by all of you. There is a 120 acre property near me owned by the widow of Red Skelton, it is set up for horses with several homes and buildings - it would be a great animal rescue and is currently just sitting there empty, although someone may live in one of the homes, but the horse facilities and barns are not being used. I wrote a letter to Mrs. Skelton to see if she would lease me the property for a rescue. I will mail it tomorrow on the anniversary of Brandi's death - hopefully she can influence the response. Maybe it's a good thing we never got a motorhome - I hope this works out - it's all because of you people and your love that glows from every comment. You all are my inspiration, I just want to say thank you.
I will be sure and include you in my prayers. What you are about to embark on is a journey that will forever change not only your life but the lives of people and animals all around you. You cannot imagine the joy and heartbreak you will receive along the way, but it will be worth all of the tears and laughter you will experience and be able to share with others.
May God bless your efforts as you stay the course that sometimes will seem unattainable but by the grace of God His will will be done in and through our lives. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I know it will take alot of work. Here in California we are having a huge problem with foreclosures on homes and people are bringing their perfectly behaved pets (mostly dogs) to shelters. Since the shelters are overflowing, these angels are being euthanized within hours. The families loseing their homes have no choice as most rentals do not allow animals. We've got to do something and the sooner the better.

Richard - I forgot to mention, you might want to try apple cider vinegar for your kidney stones....
Here's a helpful link you can copy and paste into the address bar:

I've been taking 1 tblspn mixed with 16 oz water and 5 drops stevia (healthfood sweetener) for about a month and feel great. You have to get the organic unfiltered raw kind. It works. Also, eating cherries (6 per day in my morning cereal) has eliminated all my joint pain - even my husband's tennis shoulder injury that has plagued him for 10 years no longer bothers him.

Carole,
I am in awe of the act you will perform tomorrow. What a kind and"Gentle Spirit" you truly are.
You have inspired me to do a kind act for a rescue group on August 14. It will be two years since Gizmo crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We will never forget him.
Thanks for posting! Please let us know how it goes.
Richard--I, too, was wondering how you were feeling. Hope all is okay.

Gizmo's Mom:
I can't believe it's been a whole year since I held my Brandi in my arms. It still hurts alot. Gentle Spirit is the name of my ranch, because we have kind and gentle Tennessee Walking Horses, I take it as a compliment you applied it to me.
Somehow, doing something in Brandi's memory makes me feel better. I hope it helps you with Gizmo too.

It has been a busy week with a lot going on. First I was down with the kidney stones and that took the wind out of my sails. It hit me Monday morning at four and it lasted until that afternoon until about five thirty. By then I was drained of any energy. Tuesday I took it easy and little if anything at all except just rest. Yesterday I was busy with trying to take care of some things at the animal shelter and arranging transportation for a Golden Lab to Valdosta, Georgia for August 5th.
Sue and I will be taking a Lab that has been adopted by a couple from Florida to Valdosta where we will meet them at the Lakeland KOA. We will stay for a couple of days and then come home.
We found out yesterday Charlie is very much afraid of thunderstorms. He could not be comforted as he tried to get into our laps, our pockets, anything to get away from the noise. Finally he got into Sue's lap and she covered his head with a blanket and only then was he satisfied. He slept there until it was bed time and then I had to force him outside to take care of business.
I don't know what to expect out of him if he were alone during a storm but I have visions of Marley in the book "Marley and Me," God forbid!
Jodi Pope one of our valued volunteers brought over some medication for one of the puppies at the shelter for me to administer this morning while I am there. I have to meet Sgt. Mac in just a little while so I had better get going.
The Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue is doing well making progress toward having a spay neuter clinic soon. The land has been cleared and is ready to have the driveway put in. At the last meeting new officers were elected and a new set of by-laws were adopted which will help in it's continued growth.
I believe we have overcome a lot of the growing pains that comes with a new organization and the future looks great for the rescue effort.

Just a suggestion: one of our pets was afraid of thunderstorms. The vet told us to give her 1/2 of a baby Benadryl (or generic). It worked but she was a little "out of it"; we figured we had overdosed her. So we purchased a "calm" pill from Pet's Smart (mostly herbs and stuff, no "real" medicine). Sorry I have forgotten the name of it. It helped with thunderstorms and road travel excitement when we remembered to give it to her. We would also put her in her cage and covered it if the thunderstorms were expected while we were away. I would put our voice activated recorder on and leave it on a table near her cage to see if there were any barking or other noise. We never heard a peep out of her, so we assumed that between the pill and covering the cage, she felt more secure and safe. It worked for us; it may work for Charlie.
Thanks for listening.
