I don't think I'd want to drive 4 or 5 hrs. somewhere, do what ever it is I'm going to do, then drive 4 or 5 hrs. back, Jon, believe I'd make it an overnighter.
Cold here today, got all the way up to 40 degrees, it's 24 degrees right now and clear. Appears we're in a cold spell for a bit. Hope all of you are keeping warm out there, hope your all well and hope you had a nice day. I'm getting ready to go clean up. Ya'll take care and we'll try to limp this thread on a little longer. Did I mention it was cold outside??

Yeah, Jim, DW says overnighter, too, so I guess that is the way it will be. I suppose I should call the Lodge at MAFB, see if they have a room available for Thursday or Friday night. I think Friday, we can go to the BX and Com on Saturday, then head home.

Good Morning All. It's been a bit since I've been down here to peek in. It's presently 1.4 outside. Thursday they had the highway closed in the morning so I had the DH home from work. He was out shoveling. He hasn't broke out the snowblower yet. He seems to enjoy getting out there and getting some exercise by shoveling the driveway. Got the last of my Christmas shopping done on Saturday. We went into the big city. Wow, I couldn't believe the traffic. It was a good combination. Payday, Saturday and 10 days before Christmas. DH treated me out at one of our favorite restaurants. When we got home we were commenting on the traffic situation in town. 2 cars on the main drag. I don't miss the big city at all.
I put a pot of coffee on and some shortbread cookies by the microwave, enjoy.
Take care out there and stay warm.
Later, Kelly

Kelly, good to see you in here. Thanks for the snack and the coffee. Needed it this morning. It was 18 degrees out there this morning, suppose to get up to a blistering 40 degrees. Suppose to remain cold for a while right now...well, it IS DECEMBER, AND almost Christmas. Jon, sounds like a plan, Guess that's one thing that can really pay off for those who serve their country and retire at it. BX & Com. and, my two brother in laws also, when needed go to the Base Hospitals. They both retired out of the USAF.
Well, got to roll, Hope all of you have a great day. Take care.

How about a winter RV question with all this winter talk? What do people do to keep the pipes from freezing when using a travel trailer in the winter? I did find a post in another thread here, sounds like it's a hassle with insulation, adding salt to holding tanks, using water jugs. Anything easier?

Shun, I've camped when the temp has been in the low 20's, it was in Cherokee NC in November..it was NIP-PY, and in WV, in a TT when the temps got into the teens!! I did, several years ago, buy some of that foam wrap insulation, think it was 3/4-1", but not sure. Anyway, wrapped it around my water hose and used black electricians tape to keep it in place. Guess that may have helped to some extent, but I used an old trick that I saw my dad use back in the 50's at home when it got really cold in WV,(and it DID get cold in WV), and that was to leave a faucet open JUST enough to allow a trickle of water to run out of the spigot all night..again, just BARELY a trickle
I've been in campgrounds where the temps. were in the 20's and low 30's to where there was a "hard freeze" and I've yet to have had a water line freeze in a camper, though, campers around me have had their water lines freeze, and when asked what I did for my water not to be "froze up", I told them about how I allowed "just a trickle" of water to flow all night through a spigot in my camper...doesn't really matter where, but I use the one in the kitchen. Again, it DOES seem to work for me, even in pop-up's..but I've been doing it for years, even when we went to hunting camps in the winter time, and turned the water on, to keep water lines from freezing, we allowed a slight trickle of water to flow through a spigot in the house. Just one idea and it has always worked for us. I can even remember my dad, WAY BACK, lighting a kerosene latern and putting it under the kitchen sink to keep pipes from freezing...we look at that now as a fire hazard, so it's a "no-no" now...sort of like driving around for years in the 50's, 60's and 70's without seat belts being used, or any kind of a "proper" carseat for your kids...HEY Joe, Jon,,,,how did we do it, and we AND the kids all survived? Of course we use to sleep with windows and doors open years ago, you could just walk right into a neighbors home...now all doors are locked and I keep several loaded handguns in "various & sundry" places..just in case....
Gotta roll, hope ya'll have a good day.

How about when you are on the road? All that extra air flow is going to add wind chill factor too. I would think the lines under the trailer are most vulnerable.

We're having spells of warmth around here, snow is coming off the streets. More snow this weekend. I'm going to fire up my fake fire logs and think about all the hard work I could have done....

To be truthful, I aways wondered about that myself, but for some reason, I've never had anything freeze up while I was "in transit". When I have traveled TO or FROM a campsite during the colder months, I've drained the hot water heater before towing, and I have poured a little RV antifreeze down the drains, other then that, nothing else was done. The last 3 5ers that I've had, sig 5er being 1 of the 3, have had the underbelly's covered, guess that MUST help to some extent..oh, also, all my tanks are empty during the colder months...nothing kept in any of them. Guess that's about it...catch ya'll later.

Shun, Jim, one of the biggest winter misconceptions is "wind chill". I have read that it ONLY effects bare skin, because of the moisture in the skin. Wind chill does not effect your pipes, or your vehicle radiator, because there is no moisture on the outside of them (well, there shouldn't be, anyway).
I have had under-cabinet pipes freeze in the winter, but a light bulb left on in the cabinet took care of that problem. A 60 watt works fine. Just leaving the cabinet doors open when going to bed works, too. When we spent a winter here in Billings several years ago, in our old Suncrest Class A, I built the water line out of hard copper tubing, heat taped and insulated. I skirted the motorhome with Reflectix insulation, also covered the windshield and grill with it. We had no problems in the coldest weather. I hooked the coach to a 100 pound propane bottle so I wouldn't have to move it all winter, and had a couple electric heaters for additional warmth. I did nothing special to the sewer line, and oddly enough it never froze either. I guess the hot water from washing dishes kept it clear, or something. Maybe the snow insulated it. Anyway, we were moderately comfortable all winter.
Bright, sunshiny today, supposed to get up to 50! Snow by tomorrow night, maybe, increase to 60% chance by the weekend.
Ah, well, it IS December, after all..

Jon, you are correct on your statement about chill factor. It isn't as nippy here today as it was yesterday..yesterday morning it was around 17 degrees, this morning, it was 34 degrees and it's suppose to get up to around 48 here today. We're hoping to get some more of the wet stuff...I really don't care in what form we get it either..We just need it badly.
Again, gotta roll, can't believe I've been able to get in here a couple of times today while at work...must not be as busy today

later....
