Shell does have an additive that smells for the first few hundred miles but, at least for me, not inside the truck. I ignore it and it goes away.

Robo, you may be beginning to see the truth. Namely that the cost of maintenance and the generally higher cost of fuel, plus the investment in the engine itself, make payback on a diesel take forever.
You better like the noise and smell, because it will likely take 150,000 miles to break even on cost of ownership.
I'm not a diesel hater either, tow with a 24v Dodge Cummins. Just don't fool yourself about the expense.
PSD is less forgiving as far as oil change intervals plus takes 50% more oil because the fuel injectors use the motor oil as a hydraulic power system.
Part timer hoping to full time soon!

My Cummins owners manual says 10 qts. of oil. Buying the oil by the case at Sam's Club, brings the price down to $1.40 per qt of Shell RotellaT.
Even if I pay full price for the Cummins Fleetguard filter, it only cost $24 total for me to change my oil. I don't even factor in my time, because when I change my oil, I am usually cleaning out the truck at the same time.
Anyone ever use Valvoline Blue 15w40? Thought about using that, but can't beat the price of Shell at Sam's.

Robo, The new Duramax takes 10 1/2 quarts for the engine/filter change. STP filters (Champion Labs)are $4.95 and the oil is a $1.60 at Autozone. You don't have to drive one forever to offset the cost. My truck is averaging 5 miles per gallon better mileage than any of the big block gassers. You can do the math. Later! Lone Eagle

Everything about a diesel cost more...the initial expense, any repairs...
All have indicated the need for about 16 qts and the filter is huge...it holds about 2 qts on its own.
Walmart has Delo 400 or Rotella T for ~ $5.00/gallon and the filter for $9.95...$30.00 for the whole job. If my wife takes her car to Jiffylube it $19.99-24.95. If it do it myself it is about $10.00. So the ratio is about right.
It is so very important to do this...dont skimp. Doesnt matter if it is gas or diesel.
I was born in Great Falls, Mt. My parents moved when I was 5. I found them when I was 10 - they were in California.

I change about every 3,000-3,500 at Walmart. Cost is somewhere from $37.00 to $48.00 depending how they decide to bill it out.
I use Rotella and Ford filter. Ask if they fill the filter before installing. If they don't, ask that they do. I have had them changed all over the country and they do a good job. I always double check after they finish.
The dealer wants $75.00 plus to do them.

I run Amsol 15-40, synthetic, change oil every 20,000 miles, change filte every 5,000, and add one 2 qts of oil for filter, do oil analyze every 10,000 miles. Showes no sign of any significant wear.

Thanks for all the feedback. good info on all the oil & filter deals. i'am a hands on guy so the oil changes will be material cost. so far iam' leaning towards the duramax/silverado. thats another debate!

Marv---just curious as to why to put oil in
new filter before installing? I have been
changing oil and filters on my tractors and
farm trucks for many years and did not know
about this. I always put a scratch mark on filter
when it seats and tighten as per instructions on
box and never had any leaks or trouble.
