Camp Hatteras on the Outer Banks of NC at Rodanthe

Sally, Wally, (friends from Wisconsin) Sarah and myself arrived at Camp Hatteras a little before 5 pm on Sunday, March 24. I had to get out of the RV to push a button to open a gate. Sarah drove through in a normal fashion. The arm dropped down and hit our toad. It immediately bounced up and no damage was done. I reported this incident at the main office. The lady their said that, "Yes, you really have to race through not to get the tow vehicle hit." We asked for two sites for 6 nights. We were asked to look at a map and determine which sites we wanted. The lady had a difficult time checking two computer lists to see if the site was available for 6 nights. Although the campground was almost empty, Easter weekend was approaching and we could not find two sites together for 6 nights but there were some choices for 5 nights. We asked if we could drive down and see the sites. "Yes, but you must hurry. I have to close at 5:30." Wally and I drove by 4 potential sites but did not like either - they were not bad, we just didn't like them. On the way back to the office, we saw several open sites that we liked adjacent to a pond. "Yes, we could have the sites for 5 nights but since I have to close, you must come back in the morning to register."

The sites were nice. Concrete drive and patios area surrounded by better grass than you usually see at the beach and much better than the sites we had rejected. Since a utility post was close to the left side of the pad, we had to park our Adventurer on the far right to have enough room to open the lounge slide and still be able to open the outside storage - less than an inch to spare.

The next morning, Monday, we walked down to the KOA - see Cape Hattteras KOA, a Review in this forum. We decided to move.

The same lady was at the desk. When she realized that we were leaving, she apologized for her previous rudeness and did not charge us their usual $2 per night for pets. (We don't know if that is $2 for each pet per night or just a flat rate for all pets.)

Summary: The one campground person that we met gave us the impression that it was an imposition for us to be there. Although not all of the facilities were open, we do not have any disagreement with Trailer Life's ratings of 9.5/9.5*/8. The fees were much too high, especially when one considers that the campground was 90% empty when we arrived Sunday evening and not much more that half full the following Saturday morning.

Fees:
Full hookups: $42.95 per night (50 amp service)
Cable TV $3 per night
Pets $2 per night (see above)
Accept Good Sam and KOA discount cards
Almost all sites were back-ins

Just a post to reverse the order of the two threads.
