Having spent Sunday night at Camp Hatteras (see Camp Hatteras, a Review in this forum) Wally, Sally, (friends from Wisconsin) Sarah and I walked the quarter mile to the KOA. We walked through the campground, from the beach to the office. The sites were grass and gravel. There were more cabins (50+) than I have seen before at a KOA.

We checked prices and availability of sites at the office. The man behind the desk told us of a "Outer Banks Get Away" card that we could get at the Dare County Visitors Center in Nags Head. With the card, we would get 20% off of the fees. He agreed to give us the discount and we could bring the cards by later. We registered for 5 nights, walked back to Camp Hatteras and checked out.

We had an enjoyable week on the outer banks. Our visit was enhanced by a friendly staff that offered good advice on what to see and where to buy good fish. (Best takeout fresh fish is in Avon.) The beach was wonderful, the weather was cool with some showers on Wednesday. The four of us and our 5 dogs had a great week.

Summary: The camp staff we met were all friendly and helpful. We do not have any disagreement with Trailer Life's ratings of 8/10*/8. Certainly the bathrooms were modern and clean. The fees were too high, especially when one considers that the campground was 90% empty when we arrived on Monday morning and not more than half full when we left on Saturday morning. More tent campers than at Camp Hatteras (Didn't see any tent campes at Camp Hatteras.) Most of the large motor homes were at Camp Hatteras.

Fees:
Full hookups: approximately $33 including cable per night
Cable TV $2 per night
Pets: no charge in campsites, $2 per night in cabins
Accept Outer Banks Get Away and KOA discount cards
Almost all sites were pull-throughs

Thanks, Pulsar! We have booked 5 nights there in August. We had flip flopped between there and Camp Hatteras and I don't really know what made us decide on the KOA but sounds like we should be glad we did. I don't consider $33 too high at all, but maybe that's from living up here in the northeast where everything costs a fortune!

Life is too short to spend it all in one place!
