i picked up my new dodge 6.7 a couple of weeks ago and drove it around to get the 500 miles on it, then went and picked up my new jayco 341 rlqs today. It was 65 miles home from the dealer on i71 in ohio, granted there are no west virginia hills on that road but i was still impressed. I set the cruise at 55 and did not use tow haul and pulling over 10 thousand pounds of trailer it did not even shift out of overdrive.
Born2Travel, basically where I pull my fiver (16000#), the speed limits are usually 70 and someplaces in OK are 80. I have pulled with my 2004 with the D600 Cummins and the 48RE auto and pulled all the time in cruise. Only time I ever used tow/haul was going up or down a very long steep grade and then it was just to maintain speed. So I guess what I am saying is the new 6 speed should do even more than the 47RE and 48RE. I also think the single speed shift button on the gear shift that allows you to shift down or up is going to be fantastic.

A close (free) second choice is the "Diesel Truck Resource dot com".

And of course you might ask on the Tow Vehicle forum.
davea - your 2004 Dodge with 48RE locks out OD when in TH. The 05's didn't
do that - changes shift points, will (only) lock out OD until you touch throttle
again. The '06 has an option of TH or OD lock out. [one or two pushes of button on gear shift lever].

Guess I need to nake a comment here. The Dodges with the 47RE had some problems, and even more so if they wern't maintained as recomended. The 48RE Late 03 and up were much more bullet proof unless the trucks were enhanced for performance and that would go for the Fords and GMC as well. Add horsepower and things start to fail. The 68RE is a newer version 6 speed of the Dodge automatic tranny and should be an improvement on the 48RE 4 speed. The 06/07 with the 48RE does have 2 additional controls for towing, Tow Haul and OD off. The tow haul changes the shift points and allows TC lock up much sooner. OD off is just as it says. Can tow all day with my 07 5.9 48RE in tow haul without any problems and still be in Over drive even in the hills in Tenn & Ky.

donhov - guess I need to add a comment here too.
Your comments are "right on".
Was there something incorrect with what was previously said?
My '05 tows in OD all the time too - whether I like it or not!
[Along with all the other '05 48RE equipped trucks].
Don't know the height of those "hills" in TN, but towed up to
12 thousand feet (Loveland Pass, CO. - US-6) in that "mode",
towing my 34' 5er.
Of course, it downshifts going -UP- hill, just like
(I think) yours and all the others do.
[Or doesn't yours downshift on those TN "hills"?
Ford & Chev guys are gonna love this answer!]
I certainly would like to have the '06 and later set-up - and of course the new 68RE tranny.
However the 48RE "as equipped" does fine. I have a friend who put
over 200 thousand on his (supposedly) "not so stout" 47RE.
Truck has 350K on it now - no engine work yet.
Probably should have (also) added that beginning in '06 the factory
approved the Jacobs EB with the auto tranny.
Not that any of the foregoing had anything to do with the OPs question, LOL!

For 07 Dodge is using 2 different transmissions, On the Cab & chassis they are using a more commercial trans, the Asian. On the 2500 & 3500 series it is a Dodge in house tranny, the 68RE.
In my above post I didn't mean to imply that the other posts were incorrect, just mentioning how well the Dodge trannys are holding up in answer to the original question about transmission problems. There was a post on another site(don't remember where) concerning various transmission repairs/recalls/updates and think Ford & Chevy had many and Dodge had only 1 or 2. Think overall history on all manufactures that Dodge has fewer problems than any of the others overall. Not saying that you can't get a bad one but that holds true for all manufacturers.
Keep in mind that the "new" 68rfe is not a Dodge trans and is not really new at all. It's built by Aisin and has been used in medium duty trucks for years so it does indeed have a track record.

Jeez ppl read the previous posts. donhov is correct.
The 68rfe is a DODGE built tranny and it is only in the pickups. It is based off the 545re from the hemi trucks but heavily modified and beefed up. It is totally electronically controlled.
The Aisin (not Asian) is only in the Cab and Chassis trucks. It has a PTO output available with different gear ratios also. The 68rfe does not have a PTO.
