*** SEE UPDATED POST AT BOTTOM OF PAGE ***

(ORIGINAL POST from 2007)

Has anyone ever stayed at Chenango Valley State Park, outside of Binghamton, NY?? Just wondering if it was a nice place/campground. We live about an hour or so away from that area and were thinking of maybe doing a weekend camping trip there this summer -- and take the kids to the Binghamton Zoo for an afternoon.

Since Binghamton is not that far away -- we've also been considering going back to see the Roberson Museum and Science Center/Planetarium, and the Children's Museum is supposed to be pretty good too. There is also the Phelps Mansion (a post-Civil War Victorian mansion to tour) which would be neat to see as well.

Has anyone ever been to any of those places/attractions mentioned? Are they worthwhile?

Would you recommend camping at Chenango Valley State Park? Are there any others in the area that might be worth looking into?

As always, any input is helpful and appreciated!

Thanks cyber! We mostly camp in PA state parks.. and as you know (being from PA as well) most only have electric here too -- so that is not a problem.

How are the campsites at Chenango Valley tho? It's not like a "parking lot" scenario is it? We prefer wooded sites, and well spaced apart from the neighboring sites (at least SOME sort of space/privacy)... Got any recommended sites that fit the bill?

If you have any photos.. I'd appreciate seeing some, if you would be so kind to share? (i'll provide an email address if that'd be easier?)

Thanks a bunch!

The people at this state park are one of the best. Easy to get to Exit 3 I-88 make left at light, on left about three miles up. If you get tired of the state park try Tall Pines Campground, 2715 rt35 in Bainbridge NY it's off I-88 about 25 min to Binghamton, Great place, we (two sons 16&14 had a great time) right on the river. This one is kind of like Keen Lake in PA. Not as big but same atmosphere.

We really like Chenango Valley SP and stay there at least once a year. It's a great little gem and usually not crowded. The sites are generally quite roomy with some privavcy. There is an older section of the park where the sites are more open and less roomy (Pine Bluff). Chipmunk Bluff is our favorite area, but it has no hook ups if that is a concern. We stay at NY and PA state parks and you will find it similar to PA state parks.

Roberson is worth the visit for the kids, and since you've been to the zoo, I assume you have checked out the Discovery Center, also worth the trip. I have not been tot he Phelps Mansion. There are some other carousels in the area besides the one at the zoo, and they're fun, too. I know you have a Yankees minor league team in Scranton now, but the Binghamton Mets are a fun stop as well - go on a fireworks night (most weekends). As far as other campgrounds go, we also like Greenwood Park, run by Broome County. It's also a nice little gem, although it's sites are not as roomy as CV and it is not as easy to get to.

We drove through Chenango Valley State park on our way home last week. We wanted to check it out before we pulled our new 5er there.

They have only 2 camping loops left(they lost the first 60 some spots to the floods last year, and this was one of the electric loops) They have only a minimum number of electric sites now. We were speaking with one of the rangers and were advised to make reservations if we wanted to have an electric site.

The campground is wooded although there is not much understory and so the sites are not private. With a popup you would have no trouble getting into almost any site (they only have a few of the longer sites left).

They have a nice beach area, although you need to drive to it from the camping area.

We thought it was a very nice campground just not for us until we become more comfortable backing into narrower spots with large trees.

I hope that this helps.

The Ross Park Zoo is nice - Be sure to check out the Discovery Center right next door too. I haven't been to Roberson Museum and Science Center/Planetarium since I was a kid, but they were fun then. Have Fun!

CVSP is beautiful...nice swimming area, trails to hike...the sites with electric are usually full... so keep that in mind. Zoo is great Discovery Center is great for smaller kids. You can also check out Greenwood Park..it is a Broome county park...50 camping sites... first come , first serve so make sure that you reserve a site. Nice swimming lake, trails to hike...we just got back from camping at Oquaga Creek State Park outside of Deposit NY.. beautiful. Nice big sites, no electric though... site mainly open. Hope this helps!!!

*** UPDATED POST ***

I wanted to restart this thread back up and see if anyone else has any input on this State Park.. and maybe as to what site suggestions might be the best?

Does anyone have any pictures of the campsites?? I'd be most interested in seeing them. We never did make it here back when I first posted this. Hoping all the flooded sites are restored and back in order now? We do hope to get to this place later this year..(if not this year.. Next year for sure!!!)

I also wanted to say that I appreciate everyone's input... it is most helpful in our planning!!!

Keep the opinions/suggestions coming.. and PHOTOS if ya got 'em!

Thanks so much!!

Never got to thank you for this other suggestion you made, faithfulcamper! I will keep Greenwood Park in mind as well. Do they have electric hookups?
