Just came back from the website and I can no longer find anything reference towing four down. It has been awhile since I checked but I swear I check and it specifically said it could not be towed four down......or maybe I'm just having another blonde moment. I think it would be a great toad. Will be watching this thread for more info.

The new 2008 Smart fourtwo, which will be available in early 2008, is not towable 4 down.

I test drove one last week on their Smart tour and spoke at length with a very knowledgeable Rep/engineer. I've got a small deposit down and will finalize purchase contract when called in by order of deposit number.

I've begun a search for a small flatbed trailer. The car only weighs 1800 lbs. so it doesn't need to be a full on car hauler. I think an ATV style trailer will work well.

I'm just not sure I want the hassle of stowing the trailer when parked in RV resorts.

Thanks for the info Randy. I was hoping for a test drive last weekend but opted to celebrate the 4th early in Heber/Overgaard and had a blast (only 91 degrees) Guess I will drop off my short list for new toad-no trailer hassles for me!

The USA version 451 Smart car can most assuredly be towed 4-down. Blue Ox has an in stock tow bar and plate for the Smart and I know it is in fact being done.

The tranny on the Smart is actually a " manual " gearbox lubed with it's sump rather than pumps. The clutch and gear changing is done with servo systems controlled by computer and such, but it's basically a standard gearbox without any torque converter. Ya put the selector into neutral and tow it away. Shouldn't be much load for a MH that might be challenged a bit in the power department or one that has issues with adding tongue weight or total carrying capacity maybe.

We carry a Smart Cabrio in our Damon garage coach and it works out real well for us. We got the Smart to replace a Scion xB which had LOTS of storage and got reasonable fuel economy ...but... it wasn't suitable for dinghy towing AND the Smart fits right into the garage for when we don't want to carry our sidecar motorcycle rig. We like the little bugger fine. Is it the most car ya can buy for the money? Not by a long shot. It IS fun, and drives nicely. Actual mileage is a bit over 40 MPG on average. Our engine is still maybe a tad tight and new. We have seen segments of around 50 MPG but with mixed city and suburban driving we get closer to 42 MPG .
These cars DO require premium fuel due to the USA version having engine and gearbox management software which is mapped for a bit more " performance " apparently when compared to the recent Canadian gas version. The CDI diesel version is NOT available in the USA.

I'm VERY happy with the Smart Cabrio as a nice sporty little car that fits into our coach garage. We only need a two seater so it really is just like a fancy sidecar rig that has a spiffy convertible top and A/C and a heated seats and stuff like that. It's quite comfortable to drive and ride in. It is SMALL. The beagle rides in the cargo area behind the seats and likes that just fine. That's all we need when on trips. I LIKE not having a trailer or towing a dingy.

But, if towing is what ya want to do and if the Smart suits yer needs... you most assuredly CAN tow the Smart. It's NOT for everybody. You CAN tow it. Is it the perfect all-around dinghy choice? No way.

Did I mention the Smart fits in our MH garage? WAY COOL ...

:-)

I'm towing my Smart cabrio 4-down with the Blue Ox base plate and tow bar. No problems. My local hitch dealer has set up a couple of other Smarts for towing, too. Lots of myths and misinformation out there about the Smart, but I'm surprised that a rep didn't know any better.

I did not see anything on their website indicating that they were not towable, could have missed it I guess, so I emailed the company and got a reply back stating that they where towable 4 down.Seems we have conflicting information.
Thats what I remember reading about them. Towable four down, factory might even offer a towing package.

The dealer we ordered ours from stated that is 4 down towable. Has sold several already that are being towed.
