According to their website and a recent NBC news report the only advantage to this car regarding towing is it's size and light weight. Mileage is not that great for the USA model. Probably due to the emissions change requirements compared to the European model. Their are many other cars that cost less and get just as good and even better mileage.

You would think a small 3 cylinder vehicle as small as it is would be in the over 50 mpg range, but supposedly it's only in the 35 or so mpg range.

I average about 38-40 MPG in mine, depending on highway or city driving. I wish it were even better, but it still beats most any car out there that isn't a hybrid or diesel. It's also a blast to drive, the convertible I've always wanted without paying an arm-and-a-leg, and an automatic that I can tow 4-down.
Yup, I'm one happy Smart owner.
