This must be our lucky year. We have a 2002 Jayco Designer unit with only 16,000 miles purchase new. While getting ready for trip, I found what appears to have been a leak in the front far left side of the overhead cab. We've looked at the window and the seals on the front of the cab to see if anything obvious - but nothing that we can tell. The main issue is the very left corner where the slide stabilizers are stored. The luan is spongy and when I pulled up the mattress I noticed that we have some discoloration in the same far left corner of the wood that supports the bed but not spongy. We did have a situation where some of the channel that goes around the motorhome came out and we had it replaced, but my husband doesn't think this would have been where water would have came in. We have an extended warranty but are planning a trip to the beach in a week in 1/2 so not enough time to take to dealer and have looked at (our dealer always ends up having our unit for a month at a time whenever warranty repairs needed). I'm worried about the frame of the unit. If need be, we can replace the wood without any major issue, as we're pretty handy, but hoping that Jayco doesn't use wood in their frames. I read in one of the threads that they use aluminum, anyone know? Also, any ideas of where to look for the leak or if the missing channel could have been our culprit. The area was dry but it was musty. I cleaned it with bleach to kill any mildew that may have been growing. We were hoping to trade the unit for a 5th wheel unit but now that we've found this leak I don't know what we're in for.

I had the same problem, I took it to a collision specialist, they had it fixed in a week. I would recommend that you fix it sooner than later.

Pretty sure it's aluminum-framed, so the structure should be OK. Still, there's plenty of other material to get damaged as you found out. I don't know where the slide locks are stored, but you mentioned the cabover window. Near there are the clearance lights, and those are common leak sources. Have you looked at the roof and its seams? We used a Jayco Designer fiver for a few weeks and when we got back off the road and were washing it we found a loose seam where the rubber roof met the front cap.

Check your clarence lights, they are notorious for leaks.

Welcome to the world of class c cabover leaks. There are two kinds of class c owners....those who have had leaks, and those who will have leaks. Just spent 3 days ripping out wood damaged by a water leak in my 1987 Tioga Arrow cabover area. Remember, the leak may not be directly near, or over the damaged area.

Our leak came from from the gutter running water into the end of the seam that came over the cab. It actually ran with force enough to run uphill into the downward pointing end of the seam. Enough so, that it ran down the inside wall, and filled the space under our bed in the cab over part with enough water to wet the mattress from underneath. We had to drill holes in the underside of the cab-over to drain it all out!

How true that is. Unfortunatly I fall into the group who has already had leaks. A poll on that topic might make for interesting reading.

Hi Chockwald,
What did you use to replace the wood you removed?
Any pictures?
I have a 86 Coachmen that I will need to be doing the same, and it would sure be nice to see someone elses' work.

You can see my pics at photobucket I got caught in a bit of time crunch and forgot to take more pictures of the final finishing up, but this will give you an idea of the tearout, at least.

Yep. Mine are fixed. One of them was there since new, I'm sure and the other was a matter of time before it appeared (workmanship). Mine was kept covered in its previus life so I didn't spot them until it spent some serious time in the rain.
