IMHO, what good is a 5'er that has a water tank that can't be full while traveling??!! When we travel in the winter south we fill the water tank at home mainly for our overnights at Walmart. I hate wasting money on a campsite when you can't sit outside and enjoy a campfire or what have you!! I find our unit handles better with a full FW tank then a partial....................

My fresh water tank is put in length wise so a full water tank should put less stress on the tank because no slushing, plenty of water for whatever the need arises, home tasting water not chemical laden city water, and more weight on the pin. 400 pounds will make less difference in mpg and hill performance then an extra 5mph in speed will so I'd be dumb not to carry full.

Desperado,
We, too, have "been there--done that." We were so glad to have that water. We never travel without at least 1/2 tank of water.

The majority of our camping is drycamping or boondocking, so our tank is filled as often as I have access to good water. We always start out with our good well water from home. We can get almost a week on a tank of water and have needed to stretch it that far on occasion.

We generally prefer to travel with only enough to get to the next campground. However, we have found ourselves having to dry camp for several days unexpectedly and ran out of water. After a couple of these experiences we now travel from place to place with a full tank.

As a catastrophe insurance adjuster, I have to be up and ready to go at a moment's notice. Sometimes I travel to areas where there are literally NO services available, including electricity or running water.
In the many trips I have made over the past few years to these types of disaster areas, I have pulled with a full FW tank, and have had no problems. I usually also carry three or four cases of bottled water for drinking.
Don't really notice much difference in pulling or stopping. MPG about the same.

I carry full. Whole rig rides better.
