Well it’s getting close to the start of my adventure…… tomorrow some time, the earlier the better. Thirty-Five to Forty days to move towards Alaska and back…. Yes, “move towards” has entered my thinking already. I do know I will go to the following places for sure.
Salina, Ks. – Re-visit for fourth time in attempt to recall events from USAF tour in 1959. Gallup, NM. -I always seemed to enjoy the sights and people here. Phoenix, AR. –May work a week or two at Temp OFFICE job being dangled. Route 66 in Arizona –Slowly travel this road, using “tour book” purchased years ago, and revisit attractions from the Fifty’s & Sixty’s. Las Vegas, NV. –Going thru city upsets me today (the changes) but may stop for buffet meal. Yosemite NP –Entering E.Gate this time, will not have “snow storm” chase me (maybe). San Francisco –Bowl of Chowder at Pier ?... Ride trollys, see China Town. Calif. Route 1 –I will pray for “tolerance” to endure the constant turning and rock slides… sights are worth it. Portland, Or. -Visit daughter for a day or two…. just got back from air flight trip to see her Graduate from Nursing school. North to Alaska. – Canada for sure…..
I’ve prepared my equipment as best I was able, calling on the experience of six previous trips, and of course the knowledge base of this and other FORUMS. Still…, my temperament and “limited recall” will allow something to reach up and grab me again. BUT, that’s life isn’t it!
My trip is in part, about the people I meet as I travel….how they greet me tells me so much about them and their circumstances. Most people are up and enthusiastic about life, some are not. Sad to say, I need to be constantly reminded as to how well off I have it.
Freedom is also part of Trip. To be able to “stay not stay”, “turn not turn”, "buy not buy”, (Opps, there goes another lie, down to three or four a day. opps, another lie.)
But two out of three is okay.
I will not give daily or weekly reports on progress, but just an occasional HOWDY here and there.
Certainly taking the long way, but GO FOR IT and enjoy the roses. Have a great trip as you will always remember it. I'm getting a new knee next week so I'll be going back next year again........................and again.
Well, another year has passed and thinking of trying again for Alaska this year..... It will not happen for a few more weeks, but, hopefully it will and I'll at least get into Alaska this time.
I will be taking pretty much the same route again, wanting to go along Rt# 54 near Pratt, KS. where I seen something very unusual....
Way out in "Oz land" a Flea market type of setup was established at someone's farm, and to attract people, a city block long stretch of Rt 54 had iron imagery displayed. It consisted of Symbolic imagery ranging from Scarecrow men, Disney type characters, to almost anything one would see in a nightmare. In all my travels this was the most unusual sight, and since I love traveling west through Kansas farm land, as well as New Mexico desert, I'll be going through this area again.
I'd post a picture but can not figure out how, or if one can anymore.
Turbo Dude:
How did the new knee work out? I sure hope all well, please respond.
Turbo? Do you drive a Turbo diesel?
Has anyone else have a story about adventures towards Alaska?
Mr Bojangles, good luck on your trip this time. Hope you make it all the way there and all the way back with no problems, but lots of wonderful memories. My husband and I have wanted to go to Alaska for 30 years and haven't made it yet. This will be our first year with our new to us 5th wheel so we'll get some practice in and maybe make it to Alaska next year. Keep us posted on your progress and experiences.
Thank you..... I hope you guys realize your dreams soon also.....
I live near Appalachian Trail myself and on occasion have showed up at "Port Clinton" rest area with equipment and food to cook breakfast for hikers, while listening to their stories. Too old to hike myself, but often re-live the time wife and I hiked into the Grand canyon for a week, staying at "Phantom ranch" overnite. The hike up almost killed us.... but we enjoyed.
I hope your mate gets to hike the trail (read your profile).
I will give feedback on experiences during trip..
No, thanks to you, Mr. Bojangles. You've revived interest in something that got shoved to the background over the years and we're really interested in how your trip goes, obstacles, etc.
My Dad was from Shamokin, PA and I still have a lot of relatives in the area. I am very close to a cousin at Lake Wynona near Auburn who lives just a couple of miles from part of the Appalachian Trail. That was planned as a layover spot for my husband. I told him he could hike the trail and I'd meet him at different points along the way with the RV. Also have a lot of relatives in the Hamburg and, gee, I've forgotten how to spell it, but sounds like Manoy, area. We'd make a trip to the cousin's place at Lake Wynona, but the tolls just about kill you and the turnpike is for the birds.
