Several people asked me to post my opinion about Tropical Palms when we got back, so here it is... we decided against Fort Wilderness for several reasons 1. Tropical Palms offered more flexibility on the amount of days we could decide to stay 2. We paid $38.00 the first two nights -compared to $85.00 at Disney (We know some people think it is worth it, but without kids, and only being at the RV from about 11:00 pm until 9:00 am each day, we didn't think the difference was worth it. At the Palms, when we extended our stay another three days, they gave us 25% off. This is a special until Sept. So that even made the cost less. 3. We enjoyed visiting Old Town and loved eating at Flippers (thanks for the suggestion) The cg was great, people very friendly and helpful. The pool was very clean and open 24 hours a day. Nice cafe that stayed open late and had large selection. Bathrooms clean. Front sites more manicured than back area. You could pick your own site. Large sites in back area.
Worked out great for us for this trip. May do Wilderness another time.
Is Tropical Palms the CG at the end of the road that runs past old town? if it is, we stayed there, and liked it. I didn't know $85.00 at Disney.(what are they thinking?) We don't have kids or grand kids that would go to Disney, so $85. is out of the question, They run you out of Wal-Mart parking lot, so we went to the CG past Old town and stayed for three days and will do it again, nice place. First place we was ever at, that pool is open 24/7, I liked that.
Tropical Palms is at the end of the road past Old Town. You do have to take into consideration that if you drive to Disney, parking does cost you $10.00 plus your gas to get there. Some people don't like to drive there. However, I will say, directions were very easy from the cg. We didn't have any trouble getting there and only took us about 10 minutes to get there. Some people like using Disney transportation. The only time I don't like to use their transportation is when you go to Downtown Disney. It took a long time every time we used it to go down there. I think everyone has to look at their own situation and decide what works for them. I think both places have pluses and minuses.
Just thought I would mention that I was at Fort Wilderness in December and our site wasn't nearly $85.
I was something like $45 for a regular site and $56 or $58 for a preferred site.
You might be interested in knowing that your information (regarding the FW rates) is not accurate according to the data posted on the Fort Wilderness website.
From April 15 through July 7, 2007 (Disney's "regular season") you would not have been charged $85 for any RV site at Fort Wilderness.
It's pricey, yes, but to say it's $85 per night is not the complete story.
According to Disney's Fort Wilderness website, the rates vary from as low as $41 (for a water & electric site during their "value season") to a high of $96 (for a FHU site with cable during a holiday season).
The only time a FHU site would be $85 is if that site were one of the "preferred" sites and were rented during Disney's peak season (Feb 15 thru April 14).
Maybe you got overcharged?

I look at the difference in cost between campgrounds as minimal in importance.
When you consider the cost of owning an RV and, in my case a tow vehicle, paying for annual upkeep and storage, taxes and insurance, diesel fuel to get there, cost of tickets to DW, the nightly cost of the campground is not so important to me. If it's $40 a night or $100 I'll stay where I feel will be the most enjoyable.
The cost of the campground can alter the overall cost of the trip by only a small percentage. Although I can also see the point of the original post. If you're only going to stay in the campground from 11 PM to 9 AM, why pay extra? We did, however enjoy the benefits of early access to attractions and the worry free transportation.

Getting back to the subject of the thread, We were at Tropical Palms in October and we found the cg to be as good as ever but there are a lot of cottages in there now. Keep reducing the number of camp sites.

As I stated in my original thread, our decision this time was mostly based on the ability to extend our number of days so it worked for us. As far as the cost, when I called to make a reservation for the week of June 18, I was told the cost was $85.00 and that it was a "preferred site" that was all they had available. I didn't check the website to check the price, I just know that is what we were told. I was only calling four or five days in advance and was even amazed that we could get in.
The reason though for my post was to report back on Tropical Palms as some wanted to know if the place had gone down. They do have several cottages on site now, but hardly any of them seemed full, and it didn't bother us that they were there and there still seems to be plenty of RV sites.
There is another park about a mile further east on 192 where we are staying just for reference for anyone looking for a CG convenient for Disney etc. It's Sherwood Forest and we are here for 2 weeks @ $99 a week. Sites are on grass (Tropical Palms has concrete pads) and a little close together if they are really busy, but it's 50amp FHU (but no cable). No shortage of room as they appear to have maybe 200 sites.
