I'll be doing some dispersed camping/"boondocking" in Colorado/Crested Butte/Gunnison area.
Can I leave the trailer and camp set up to go for a senic drive (4 hours)?
What precautions should I take?
What's your experience with leaving your "stuff" for a few hours?

I only camped here in the South but I couldn't leave anything unlocked no matter where I went...I put a bicycle lock thru my wheel on the tt and I got the hitch locked 2...Everything is inside and locked before I leave...Someone might get something but they won't move it to get things and being in a truckstop or Walmart parking lot I'd expect someone 2 c something.

We really liked Taylor Resevoir and Park area, you can see our website page and set up: Laura-n-Sasha.com as you can see in the pictures, there are some that are really and truly boondocking at Tin Cup area. Although we did not boondock in that area, it is better to be safe than sorry. We have locks for our trailer, and the regular locks for our camper.

My PU is hard sided so that makes it a little easier to secure. We do our best to lock and secure everything we can but can't let worry ruin the trip either. I have a lock on the tongue and put a chain thru the wheel and around the bumper so wheel wont turn. But like they say, "locks keep honest men honest". If they want it bad enough they'll get it. Do your best, pay your insurance and enjoy.

We live in Colorado and Boondock most of the time. You want to make sure that your trailer is secure and not to leave a lot of things lying about. We have not had any "bear problems", but have spoke to tent campers that have had their camp ransacked. Even in the high country you still want to make sure you chain your generator and coolers to your trailer. We have always done that and have never had any other problems.

I have never had anything missing while boondocking in Colorado or Utah, almost 40 years so thats a good record. We camp in very few campgrounds so I can't speak for them. Since gas has gone up I do make it a point to chain down the ATV gas cans.

What's your experience with leaving your "stuff" for a few hours? We always pack up everything, hitch up to the truck and take it all with us. We don't want the Indians or bands of outlaws to swoop down on our unprotected things and steal them.
OK..... so I exaggerated a bit.
Use your common sense, lock things up.

From what I've heard, there is no boondocking in Colorado
In general, the further you are from population centers, the less likely you are to have problems.
