Always being a Rotella user,I noticed Valvoline has their own brand (Premium Blue)that has been approved by Cummins.I was wondering who uses it and if it is ok for my powerstroke. It cost less also.My local quick shop wants 90+ for an oil change with Rotella.Valvoline with their brand wants 70.What is everyone paying in your area?

Any good brand of oil with the correct spec will work great in your truck. I feel that Shell Rotella-T isn't one of the best, and that still works very well. Pick any top brand. I like Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300 Super, and Shell's Pennzoil LongLife. But, you can't go wrong with any of the top brand 15W-40 CI-4 Plus oils in your engine. If you can find a retail outlet for Schaeffer, you'll find that is likely the best of the bunch. It'll also be good for double to triple the recommended oil change interval as determined by lab test, but don't try extended oil drain intervals without the testing.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

I have used Valvoline Premium Blue exclusively since I bought my truck. I now have about 52,000 miles on it and have only tested the oil once and it was good.

$70 for an oil change with filter is not bad for a diesel, I do my own and it costs me close to $50 including a filter plus my time. The PSD has a higher capacity for oil than the 3 gallons used by the Cummins so you will be getting an even better deal. Just make sure that they are changing the filter with a quality filter.

Rotella-T is mostly used by fleet owners and bulk buyers. I remember when they brought out Cummins Gold, then told all us truckers to not change oil at the usual intervals. They'd pay for the teardowns and reimburse us later. The oil held up better than they expected, so they turned around and told us to not run it anymore. When an oil is too good, it doesn't make any money for the repair shops. Same is true for "blue". It's a dam good oil, better than smelly-T!

I started out useing Chevron delo 400 15w-40.When my truck reached 20,000 miles I switched to schaeffers supreme 9000 syn.5W-40.The chevron used to be about $6.42 gal.then went up to around $9.40 gal.I can buy fully syn. schaeffers for around $15.40 gal. and run it alot longer between oil changes.I did alot of reading about the schaeffers products at www.bobistheoilguy.com website and it comes highly recommended.coobie

The Turbo Diesel Register has a very interesting article on their home page about the CI-4 and CJ-4 oils. It's about how the newer CJ-4 oils which are formulated for the new ultra low sulfur engines with the diesel particulate filters is a compromise using less additives than the previous CI-4 and CI-4 Plus oils.

I just happened to catch the article on line last week and printed out the ranked list of oils before I went to Wally World as this weekend I had planned on changing oil in both the van and truck. Yep, pretty much everything there was CJ-4 oil.

The latest figures I've seen is that Rotella-T is most popular among independent owner-operators and about third in popularity among fleet owners. It isn't bad oil, nor is it great oil.

I do it myself.

3 gallons of Mobil 1300 Super is $27 at Walmart. A Fleetguard filter is $10 at the local truck shop.

It takes me $37 and about 15 minutes to change it.

Check with the dieselstop.com or with your local ford dealer. I seem to remember a problem with foaming with the ford engines while using rotella. There is a TSB out on it I just can't remember what year models it affected or which engine. I personally prefer delo. Just something to look into before possibly hurting your engine.
