They look flimsy and dangerous to me. I built ours of stainless square tubing with aluminum diamond deck steps. I've fallen on my butt enough on slippery steps on tugboats over the years. I don't need to fall from my own camper!!

We have a bumper step with a step stool (one of those that are also a tool box) below. We also have a grab bar. So far (knock wood) I haven't slipped but John did take a tumble shortly after we got the TC. The steps and entrance were wet and he went all the way down and banged himself up pretty good. I believe that falling is always an issue. Let's face it, it is a LONG way down unless you have a side entrance.

After slipping myself a couple of times without actually falling, I'm very careful on them now. However, my grandson, 8 at the time, took a nasty fall when exiting the camper when his foot slipped on the top step and went through the space between the rear of the top step and the camper itself. His leg went all the way down and lodged there, his upper body twisted and he fell on his back onto the steps. Luckily, he wasn't hurt but it scared the heck out of me.

I'm glad this question has been asked in a way that collects good answers.

I have stated many times that I wouldn't own a truck camper that came with the rickity scissor steps.

The Office of Occupational Safety and Health Administration would not allow scissor steps to be used on any job in the USA.

Just maybe the manufacturers will pay attention to this thread and create a sensable solution to getting in and out of their campers.

Our Lance 1161 has safe steps.

Snow River campers have what appears to me to be a good solution.

you speak for OSHA now too, huh sleepy. it is your opinion that they are rickity. keep in mind that not everyone here is incapable of conquering scissor steps.

i understand though, if you dont have it, it's not worth having. btw, this is a poll if youve fallen off of scissor steps.. since you are above owning them, you dont need to post on this thread.

More than one of us that do not have scissor steps replied. You might also note that A LOT of people reported falls involving scissor steps.

I don't like them for other reasons as well. Pinched fingers when folding, they are heavy (compared to SR steps at least), there was no good place to store them on the two campers I've used that had them, etc. Or am I'm not allowed to comment...??

kandoll, if one wants to reply on a poll about falling off of scissor steps w/out using them, then go ahead. you dont need to call them rickity or speculate on osha not allowing them while doing so.

you might also note that plenty reported no fall. i find them to be light, but if you find them heavy... i guess they are heavy for all.

I'm sure most everyone connected to truck camping has USED scissor steps at one point or another even if we don't all use them on our current setup.

And like I said, I found them heavy, esp. compared to my Snowriver stairs.

OSHA regulations wouldn't have to be speculated on, I'm sure the regulations are spelled out in about 15 pages of technical talk somewhere! :-)

I think it's pretty clear that you are just trying to pick a fight.

Not yet, we use the ladder as a grab rail. AND we try to pass stuff to some one inside instead of trying to walkup and carry an arm full.
