We are going to Maumee Bay State Park in Ohio for a weekend trip. We like to camp in the woods or at least in the shade. Can anyone recommend a site or area that fits our preferences?

Thanks Much

Although I have stayed here, I did drive thru several years ago. If memory serves me, you'll get neither shade nor be able to camp in the woods at Maumee Bay.

Hi,
When we stayed there, I remember it being very open and flat (since its near the Lake)...it is a beautiful campground, modern and very good for bike riding, when we were there in sept. the migration of the monarch butterflies was happening and truly a sight to behold...
It is not your mountainy shady type of campground, but rather a beachy type campground in my estimation.
Hope that helps, sorry to disappoint..

Has anyone been to Maumee Bay campground recently? We are going up there the end of June, and was just curious about it. I called, and the office said that there is no water at the individual sites, but there were places to get water within the campground. Any information would be appreciated about the water, or the campground in general.

Thanks

Ohio SPs have sites with no hookups, sites with elec hookups, or a VERY few FHUs, some of which are often occupied by camphosts. (I don't begrudge them, as they are usually staying a long time!) With the exception of having any FHU sites at all, this situation is typical of SP CGs in the northern Midwest.

There are water stations located at various spots in the CG, and assuming the CG road is wide enough, you can park by one long enough to fill your tank. There are also special gray water dump stations, built of stone, at Ohio SPs - interesting (we haven't seen these anywhere else). Those are in addition to the regular drive-thru dump station.

This is why when we're reserving a site in one of our Ohio state parks that we pick one closest to these grey water dump basins. These are usually dispersed throughout the campgrounds and has a water spigot beside it if not close by. This allows us to refill our water as needed and get rid of our grey water too.

Don't forget about East Harbor state park on lake Erie too. We are heading up there the first week of August and cannot wait!! With the gas prices going up and up and up it is truly tempting to just say forget it but we're not. Camping is something we love to do together as a family and we set aside time and money to do it. Let's just say that the stimulus package is going to come in quite handy when filling up the 42 gallon tank when we head up to Erie!!!

God Bless and Happy Camping!!!

We were there about 3 years ago. It's a nice park overall, but if trees in the campground are what you seek, you'll probably be disappointed.

BGEYER we were there last labor day. just electric on sites with no water hook up. very little shade. all the trees are small. lots of paved bike paths.inland lake for swimming. couldnt swim in lake erie when we were there. first day water in lake was so brown it just looked like mud, next day it was as blue as the ocean and georgous. guess it depends on the wind direction. fishing and boat rentals on the inland lakes, golf course in park, nice nature center and hiking path close to it. any questions send me a PM

I've stayed at Maumee Bay many times and I think the previous responses have it summed up. I would say the lack of shade trees is balanced by the spacious and well dispersed sites. Because each road is a separate loop, you never back up to anyone, and in some cases you can in fact back up to the woods. Very nice facilities, and access to both Lake Erie and an inland swimming lake. About the ONLY complaint you can have is the lack of mature trees...but they are definitely bigger than 10 years ago!
