When the rv.net group got together this past winter, someone was telling us about the event in Jan. where the Branson entertainers do their auditions for the resort activity directors. My question for you is - Do you remember when and where that audition event takes place?

Never heard of that???..conversely..and I am not being rude...why would the "big" acts want to audition for anybody.. take them on their reputation of past performances or forget it... I would think that they would find that demeaning...

These are not the "big" acts. There are a number of comedians, musicians etc, who present their new shows to the Winter Texans. The shows are presented at the resorts for a very small fee - like $3-$4 admission. We get cheap entertainment and they get to work on their new material at the same time.

badgerfan...I believe you are taking about the auditions held at Snow to Sun RV resort in Mercedes, Tx in January. Last year was my 1st year in the valley entertaining and I did the Snow to Sun thing...lots of activity directors there...good place to check out the "new" entertainers in town, even some "Branson" entertainers were there trying out...if you need more info email me and I can give you more detailed info.

Having lived in the "Branson area" all of my life, there were some "entertainers" billing themselves as "Branson entertainers" in the RGV last year that I'd never heard of. And I have some very good friends that started both of the first shows in Branson. We also spend about 90% of our time down there.
That being said, there were some pretty good shows to be seen down there(RGV), and very cheap.

We spent last winter in Alamo. They have shows at most all the parks quite often. Many of them claim to have came from Branson and are excellent. You're right, they only charge $5.oo or $10.00 per person. You can attend the shows at any of the parks. They also have excellent jam sessions in most of the parks. You'll always have something to do.

I attended the Entertainment Showcase at Snow to Sun last year about the 3rd weekend in January. It was an excellent day to see lots of performers doing "their thing" for the activity directors of the various RV Parks. This is when a lot of them sign up to do performances for the coming season.
It is my understanding that this is a yearly Showcase but it moves from one park to another, so it probably will not be at Snow to Sun this winter. We were advised to contact the tourist board and get details for the 2008 show from them. It was a very fast paced procedure - 3 stages available - each performer was limited to 7 minutes maximum. No sooner had one finished than the next one started. We enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys seeing a variety of live acts.

The last I heard, The auditions are slated at Snow to Sun again. I performed there last year with a group from Nashville. Believe me, when people say they're from "Branson", it scares a lot of activity directors in the valley. DW is past Vice President of the Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Assn. Yup some pretty good entertainment comes to the Valley from Branson every January and February. The majority basically sing Karaoke to their canned music, but still do a good show. However, a few claim "from Branson" because they went through there at one time or other, seen some real 'lulu's' over the years claiming "from Branson".
Auditions are usually booked a season in advance, with performers being limited to one time only. Although it seems this is not a 'carved in stone' rule.
After five winters in the Valley, IMO, there's more music there than at ANY RV retirement area in the Nation. We've done Florida and Arizona.
The valley has about 55 jam sessions a week, usually a half dozen or so every day at different parks, and they're all free, and there's varying degrees of talent. Many people waited till they retired to start music, so are just beginning, but having the time of their lives. I teach a free guitar class usually every winter, and enjoy being able to pass on some of what I learned over the years. IMO, ya just can't beat the RGV as a winter home, especially cost wise. You can stay there almost all winter for the cost of a month in Florida or Arizona.
