Skittles.
I loved how she would run on the back of the couch where my arm
rested. She would put her little head in the crook of my arm and let
me scritch her until the wee hours of the morning. She would climb
onto my lap and fall asleep until I moved her to her own home place,
there she would curl up on her bed and have her sleepy time.
I loved how I would be playing on the computer and she would dance
across my keyboard changing my words into gibberish and making me
laugh at the way she would look up at me on her hind legs as if
saying; "Ok time to play with me now." I loved how she would curl up
her little blanket on my printer and fall asleep watching me type out
words that she didn't understand but always found interesting to
watch.
As you all know, I had life saving surgery six weeks ago and was in the hospital for
six days. My wife said that she would just sit at the top of her
cage and stare into my bedroom waiting for me to come out. I did
come home and she loved me like she always had but it wasn't quite
the same. There was a change, she seemed more distant but she
stilled loved her scritchs. She was a big comfort however, sitting with me in my chair and cuddling.
Well, Friday night suddenly Skittles decided to take the trip across
the rainbow bridge. I gave her the scritches that she eagerly accepted and she just climbed into the
palm of my hand and fell asleep and then I felt her heart stop
beating. The tumors finally took her from me.
My own heart now has a hole the size of Texas in it where she used to
be. She is my first rattie I have ever been daddy to and now we are
down to one, Scampers. I haven't really stopped crying since Friday
night not knowing what I did wrong to have her leave me like this.
My heart is truly broken now and I don't think I will be able to get
any more ratties. Thank goodness I have Scampers. She has helped me
get though this with her playfulness. But it is so hard.

Sorry to hear about your sorrow. These animals we share our lives with climb right into our hearts, don't they?

Yeah, it hurts. My husband had our dog Shan cremated so we bring her with us as we fulltime and when we finally settle down she'll be with us. Kinda morbid but he didn't want to leave her behind and it gave him solace so I am okay with it. You gave her the love she craved and she repaid you well, and she's not in pain now. What more can we ask?

So sorry for your loss. Our pet friends are with us for such a short time, but there is a ton of love on both sides in that short time. Thank goodness for the happy memories.

One thing about having rats as pets (even if you raise them for shows like I did), you and your children get to know about grieving and death, as rats typically only last 2.5 years. If they make it to 5, you're very lucky.
The difficult decision is whether or not you try to introduce another young one into the family or not, since you have another adult rat there. They don't always accept newcombers, depending on age and sex.
