I have been beating my rig up (on the off road detours)going home from San Carlos through Caborca and Lukeville, to avoid the long lines at Mariposa. There has to be a better way. Do any of you have an opinion about the best days/times to cross at Nogales going north?

Thanks.

The earlier the better. We got caught in mid-afternoon traffic and were there until dark last March.

Don,
I went thru yesterday at about 10:00 am and had about a 20-30 minute wait. I agree that if you get there in the afternoon the wait can be a lot longer, especially on the weekend. Also the wait around Thanksgiving to Christmas is longer.

What constitutes a Commercial vehicle when crossing? Wondering if I could use the Commercial crossing if not too busy.. I tow my trailer with a truck that has California Commercial registration and plates.

Art, highway 2 from Santa Ana to Sonoita is mostly 2 lane and under construction. There are at least 2 off-road detours that take you several miles each over washboard roadbed with an 18 wheeler tailgating you, this is hard on your rig. The good news is that there is normally no border wait at Lukeville. I have decided that the Lukeville route is not worth it. It is a toll road.

Had to delay our trip to El Fuerte. Now leaving on the 11th of Oct from Valley Center and will cross at the Mariposa entrance in Nogales. Will stop in Hermosillo to visit a long time Mexican amigo. We have our FMT and will have it stamped by immigration at the border or at KM 21? Not sure of that as we have always sone this at KM 21 and get our vehicle import permit at Empalme We assume thats still where this is done. One never knows.

Thank you for the heads up on the Caborca route.

When we came back on 11 March, Route 2 from Santa Ana to Sonoyta was a very good road, there were no detours and the new stretches were some of the best roads I've driven in Mexico. We saw where all the detours had been. Check Jonna's post under "Mexico" on 9/27, they took Route 2 all the way from San Luis RC to Santa Ana.

We just crossed heading South and I looked at the traffic heading North at Nogales. It was about 10:30 a.m. and there were less than 10 cars in the lineup. It all depends on waht day and the time of day. Mondays and weekends are bad. I would not travel out of my way to avoid the lines. Other than at Xmas we never spend more than an hour in the line. You would not want to enter the commercial line. Could take the better part of a day. Benjamin Hill was ridiculous. The truck line was a mile long and there were about 20 busses in the line. But we are all in RV's with air conditioning,Stereos, food and maybe beer. Doesnt sound too bad!!
