Just wanted to know if anyone pulls a 5th with a chevy 2500hd 6.0 that weighs 10000+ lbs and how does it do? We are considering getting a 5th that its gross weight is 10700. Am I biting off more than my truck can do?

The dry weight of my 5er is about 9300 ... but by the time I load it up with all the "necessaties", I'm well over 10,000lbs. I just don't tell the truck how much it weighs.

For the most part, the truck pulls it just fine. It does slow down on some of the bigger hills but I would expect that. The 6.0 seems to be a fine engine, especially if you don't mind revving it up when needed. I was concerned at first but after several longer trips I'm pretty comfortable with it.

My last truck was as you described above. I pulled a 10,000+ lb 5er however that was fully loaded not the shipping weight. If 10,700lb is your shipping weight, you will be pulling a 12-13,000+lb 5er. It will do it and the new 6.0's have more factory horses than mine had. Some will tell you to get a bigger truck and tell you all about how much time you are going to spend in prison and the number of dead and wounded you will be responsible for, IMHO your truck would do it. I like most all others, are much happier with the DMax/Ally combo. If your trips are not too long or mountainous, you will be fine. The D/A combo not only helps with Mileage, Power and Acceleration, it is great at helping to slow the 5er as well.

I had a 6.0 2500HD pulling a 10K 5er, didn't like it, poor fuel mileage, engine screaming and slow up the hills. Had to plan routes around big hills (Skyline drive comes to mind) Took the $$$ hit and got me a diesel. Much better now, can pass slower people (I still try to stay at 65MPH) and can go up them hills without slowing me or the line of traffic behind me. The 6.0 is good for the flatlanders IMHO

I could be wrong, your mileage may vary

My 5er is over 10k, I believe I'm at around 12k when loaded. I also double tow a boat that is about 4k. So all together when I double tow I'm about 16k behind a 6.0.

My area is very flat so hills are not an issue, wind is more so the topic.

Mileage with either the 5er by itself or with the boat is the same 5-7 mpg based on the trip. Interstates are 75mph vs. surface roads at 55mph. The truck will hold the rig at any legal speed but its definately working it if you get over 75 mph.

Our work trucks are all (5500's) dmax's and my brother/father both have 06 dodge's with cummins under the hood. So I'm very familar with the diesel crowd and they are absolutely better in every aspect of towing. (mileage / power / engine braking / durability)

I went with the 6.0 only because I stumbled into it during the dmax hunt. It was a private sale deal that fell into my lap and I couldn't resist.

Right now I'm actively looking for a 4500 with a dmax that I'll use for just towing and get back into a 1/2 ton for daily driving.

At 10k tho I don't think the 6.0 is to little.

I pulled a 30ft Alfa with a 2001 Chevy 6.0L for 1 year then traded for a Dmax. I have since bought a Cummins and couldn't be happier!

We have a 2002 GMC 2500HD 6.0 gasser 4.10 and a 5'er with a dry wt. of 7650...our truck does just fine on flat roads or hills, but we do not feel like we will be traveling in the mountains..which is a bummer....and the gas mileage is not good....not that we would expect it to be. We would never want a heavier camper with this truck, that's for sure.

I assume you mean the gas engine. I pulled a 12000 gvw 5th wheel for 6 yrs to AK, CO, gulf coast, Nova Scotia, no problems. Avg 8.3 MPG towing ,strong engine.2000 GMC.Had 65000 mi at trade for 06 8.1 Allison, love it too.

We have a 07 Classic 6.o our trailer weighs at 9840. In the mountains the engine screams but keeps to to the speed limit or 65 max, it only gets 7-8mpg but on the level it gets 10-11 mpg. Love the truck but wish I had a DM/A so we could have a bigger 5ver. Good Luck!

I agree with the others. My 6L would pull our 10,000+ 5th whl even up a 7% grade but scream like a banshee. Forget it if you like cruise control as the smallest hill causes it to rev high. Duramax with Allison is hard combo to beat. Put on cruise and forget it. Dave
