We brought our Sundance 2900MK 5er home today and love it. HOWEVER, I checked the tires and noticed one tire is a different name than the other three. They are all MISSION but with different names. One says "TC108 Radial S/T" and the other three say "Load Max Radial". I haven't even looked at the spare. They are all the same size - ST235/80 R16E. Here's the kicker - the DOT on the three says "1099". Now correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that mean the tires were made the 10th week of 1999? The different tire has a combination of letters and numbers. I called my dealer and told them I'm not happy at all with having almost 10 year old tires on my 2008 Sundance. What's my recourse???
Am I off-base on the date of manufacture for these tires? I know one should replace tires after 6 years and after 10 years you are on borrowed time.
I have complained to the dealer ealier about the Mission tires wanting to upgrade but the bottom line was I had to eat them. They wouldn't deal and Heartland said they were safe and were not aware of any problems with these tires. All I can say is "Do a search on this website"!!!

Later, Mike

Rookey,

Welcome to the Sundance family. I know you initially had some reservations about the total length and pin weight, so let me know how that all worked out? As you know we also purchased an 08 2900MK and love ours too. Hey, I did some research and you're tires are probably not that old. Here's the deal on the chinese made mission tires. The 4 digit DOT code you're looking at is actually not the date code. I looked up your DOT code 1099 on the DOT web site and downloaded the most up to date listings.

NAME DOT CITY STATE COUNTRY STATUS CDATE
RUBBER INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD. 10 JIANGSU CHINA A
Your looking at the four digit DOT code indicating manufactuer, DOT plant # and tire mold type.

Keep looking for the 4 digit date code that could be only on one side of the tire. My read 1907 or 19th week of 2007.

My strong suggestion is to replace those china bombs anyway and as soon as you can afford to do it. I'm replacing my chinese 16" "unicorn express" with Michelin rips or Maxxis tires.

Enjoy!

Just trash 'em and get some good tires. If you wait it might cost you more in damage and frustration later. From now on if I look for a new RV I will just set aside a few hundred bucks for tires before it is even ordered. The dealer and manufacture just dont care about these hazards that are coming with them.

Thanks for the information. I think I'll go with the Maxxis tires which are 235/80 R16. I had these on my last 5er with no "incidents". I'll keep looking for the correct code on these Mission tires (235/80R16)
Fishin: What tires did you finally buy? My current tires are only 1/4" away from the skirts, so I don't think a 235/85 R16 would fit. Isn't that about 1" taller?
BTW. We love the Sundance and it tows real nice. Our Jayco seemed to tug and chuck some of the time. I was beginning to think that was the nature of the beast. The Sundance feels a little heavier but maybe that's what the TV needed to smooth things out.
Back to tires: How many plies do the XPS RIBS have?
Thanks guys.

My Sundance has the Mission tires, and I have towed over 6000 miles with them so far without incident. I do plan on replacing them when finicially possible, but for now I just check them often.

rookey,
I see you're in Folsom...we're in Chico heading to Rocklin to take a look and a Sundance maybe this weekend. Is that where you bought yours? Did you order or take a stock unit? Did you get them to deal at all? How was your experience with the dealership?

Congrats on the new trailer!

I have the Mission tires and recently blew one, but must say I was positive on the air pressure being exactly right and was traveling above the recommend speed rating. Since then, place on call to tire manufacturer and they sent me four new tires (Freestar - same tire/different name). Can't say I feel 100% comfortable, but now check the pressures before each trip and don't go any higher than 70mph.

I think Maxxis is also made in China. I wouls go with a LT tire from Michlen. You are lucky to have 16" tires so you can do that. Dan

Thanks guys.

Michelin XPS Rib LT E tires are a 10 ply rated tire. They are a single ply steel fabric with two more steel belts in the tread which allows Michelin to recommend them for commercial trailer tire use. All other highway 10 ply rated load range E tires are two ply fabric [polyester/nylon/etc] with usually two steel belts in the tread area.
Maxxis vs XPS Ribs is apples vs oranges in long term reliability for heavy trailers at interstate speeds.
