When I buy a new car I always check invoice prices on web pages like Autobytel and a number of others. Is there a site where you can see what the Travel Trailer Dealers are paying for the units (wholesale)or is this a highly guarded secret? I'm seeing markups as high as 40%. I would much rather start at invoice and work up rather than the other direction.

I do not know of a good source for dealer prices comparable to the auto sites- don't believe there is one.
You can do some internet research to see what the TT you are interested in is selling for, however. There are several RV discounters on line that can help such as:

Shop the closest 5 dealers to your zip code. You will be surprised how far apart they are with their first offer on the exact model and options you are looking for. You may even have to go hundreds of miles to do this.
You can start from there and let them compete for your business. It is a pain and will take time and resolve, but in the end it will be worth it.
Getting a straight answer on MSRP is almost non-existent in this business.

Great advice, we did this on our last purchase, and saved thousands. The best deal was about 200 miles away, but well worth it...

I went online first to shop dealers and inventory. The Jayco dealer in so Cal has "Internet Pricing" which saved us about $5,000. It was like using the Fleet Manager at a car dealer. We called, I told him the models we were interested in and he gave me the bottom line price. We drove to the dealer and sealed the deal. Definitely the way to buy!

Spade that is a great idea to start with the invoice!!! Start with msrp of 20,000 dollars and say invoice is 12,000 dollars what would you think is a fair deal to the buyer and the dealer???? What did you do before you retired and did you get paid for what you did?? Just my 2 cents rvtommy

rvtommy,
I believe all dealers are entitled to make a fair profit, say a grand or two on the deal. What is going on in the industry where the public is gouged doesn't cut it. When mark ups are 35 to 40% above invoice, is that greed or fairness? I'll bet they get some unaware buyers to pay MSRP for the RVs and don't even bat an eye. I don't see a lot of automobile dealers going out of business because the public can find out a fair price for the new car they buy.
