Pepe's on the River is one of our favorite places. There are 2 Pepe's within a block of each other. We prefer Pepe's North, The one with the thatched roof. Pepe’s is a large open air hut right on the banks of the Rio Grand River, you can watch the sun set over Mexico from your table. Go a little before 2 to get a great riverside table.
There is a live band every day from 2 PM to 6 PM. And later on Thursdays & Saturdays. Last Winter Elvis was there every 2nd & 4th Thur. There is a good sized dance floor.
In addition to daily live entertainment Pepe’s serves some pretty good food. Our favorites are the Catfish or the Catfish & Shrimp Combo. Also very good are the Nacho Supreme Platter, easily enough for 2 people & also their BBQ ribs are good when available.
To get there take expressway 83 to mission, turn south on Conway, watch for the signs a few miles out, The 1st sign is easy to see, after the 1st right watch closely for the dirt driveway, not as easy to see.
OK, I got you started. Any body else got any fun places, good eating or activities to share.
We like to eat at the Taco Ole on Conway about 1 mile north of business 83 in Mission. They have a breakfast and lunch buffet that is awesome.
To get your vehicle windows tinted, we stumbled across a place called Aces alarm and sound that does window tinting at about 1/3 the cost of Florida, for the same brand film and quality installation. It is on US83 just east of FM 492.

The Don-West Flea Market is one of our favorites, It is a good sized market. It will keep you entertained for 1 1/2 - 4 hours depending on how much you like flea markets.
Some deals here are better than in Mexico. They have lots of RV parts & custom make sun screens & windshield covers. There is a bike shop, a sign shop, key shop, a few antiques, lots of clothing & junk. It is a pretty typical flea market. The vendors are friendly, mostly Caucasian , all spoke English.
They also have live musical entertainment, usually both outside & in the restaurant.
On a hot day the cold tap beer tastes pretty good too. The restaurant. makes a good breakfast & the other food is good too, (not exceptional but good for a flea market.) There are also outside food vendors.
It is open on Wed. Sat. & Sunday & parking is free.
It is on the south side of expressway #83 between Donna & Westlaco. Coming from the west (Mission Area) turn south just before Victoria Palms RV Park on Victoria Road and go about 3 - 4 blocks south to the parking lot. It can also be accessed from Business # 83 and is on business 83 on the North side of the hwy.
Across from the flea market is a large farmers market, I or someone else can report on that later.
On the same road as Pepe's, there's a place called the Riverside Club. They have great food, along with an enclosed boat tour available on the Rio Grande.

I have to add just a little to this post. Riverside serves a "World Famous" Pork Tenderloin, Large enough for 2 people. They serve a unique & tasty frozen Margarita, Someone said it had a touch of Orange juice & wine in it?
Their outdoor patio is lush & tropical & looks over the Rio Grand River. This really is a pretty place for a drink on the patio.
The elderly lady bartender gets a little crabby at times.
In the past, many of you may have eaten at the Country Omelet restaurant located at 2025 north 10th street McAllen, TX. I am sad to report it burned to the ground about 6 months ago. It has since reopened near Harvey Drive and north 10th street.

My gut feels like it wants to burst, there was so much on the platter & also their BBQ ribs are good when available.

We made many trips from Brownsville to Pepe's last year. I second the Catfish and Nachos. Also a must go to is the Gonzales burger shop. We also found the Padre Island Brewing Company had great weekly specials advertised in the Winter Texan newspaper, 2 meals for $12.99. I'm ready to go to the RGV now.
Here is a little more info on Gonzales Burgers in Donna.
THEY ARE TRULY THE BEST in THE WEST. Be sure to try the onion rings too.
Unless you are really hungry a burger & onion rings or fries will feed two.
We went later in the day & got to visit with the owner, what a story. The business has been in the family 60 years but as a grocery store that could no longer make it when HEB came to town. The started serving a lunch free to a poor skinny kid in the neighborhood. Then he started bringing his friends & they eventually started charging .25 cents. Then they started serving to the factory workers across the street.
Then one day a Winter Texan's car broke down across the street. He had a burger while waiting for a tow. He told his friends and his friends, friends told their friends and so forth. The Winter Texan boom in business happened only recently.
She said their sign blew away several years ago but business was so good that they did not have time to retrieve it and put it back up besides by this time they did not need a sign. There is much more to the story but I will let you hear it yourself.
They are open from 11AM to 3PM Monday thru Saturday. This place is in a residential area with no sign on the building. The only way to find it is if someone tells you about it.
It is south of Business 83 west of D Salinas Blvd. The location is S14th St & Silver Ave. When you turn west on Silver Ave. just drive until you see all of the cars and trucks (Winter Texans). It is the glass front building on the south west corner.
