This is not an uncommon problem. We solved ours by installing a 5 by 10 inch piece of exhaust shield from Koolmat, right where the passenger side exhaust manifold passes under the doghouse opening. It's easy to install, and the difference is amazing.

I just cant understand why Ford would leave out a heat shield. or some insulation for any reason. If I recall this was manly a problem on about 04s and newer, I dont recall any complaints on pre 04 units, and not on mine. The engine is the same, and so is the truck body. To my knowledge the only change was in the grill, and that's minor.
We buy Ford Van for work, extended E-350s with the V-10, about 1 or 2 a year, and know the guys at the commercial truck sales department, of the local Ford dealer. And they will be honest with us about any yellow stickers, heat problems or changes. Ford is always sending us sales stuff from the fleet trucks department. So ill see what I can find out. Unless its relevant only to the cutaway units, I think Ford sells them directly to the after market makers, and maybe there adding the yellow sticker, to get complaints off there back, like you were warned.

Check out this ford service bullentin. It sounds like they left the heat shield off the Cutaway chassis starting mid 2006.

I believe that bulletin refers to a heat shield formerly installed on the exhaust pipe above the rear axle, not in the engine compartment.

Does anyone have a recommendation of who/what type of business can make modifications for this heat problem? I live in Southern California.

campingfig,
If it were me, I'd find some local shop that can do custom coach work on RV's or other vehicles (There should be plenty of these in So Cal.) and ask them to punch a 2 inch downwards facing hole in your air conditioning duct inside your cab, attach to this hole, and aim towards the floor, a 15 inch piece of 2 inch diameter aluminized tubing so some of the cooling air goes down towards your feet. They could probably do this on both the driver and passenger sides. Also they might be able to mount inside the tubing some kind of butterfly twist valve so you could manually regulate how much cooling air got routed downwards through this tubing. I can't imagine a job like this costing more than $250.
This whole discussion came about because in Ford's infinite design wisdom, their van cab air conditioning outlets are ONLY the ones high on the dash so as to blow air on you from about the waist up - forgetting about your feet. ESPECIALLY in a van you need some cool air routed to your feet - real dumb on Ford's part. My good ole' 1995 GMC PU even allows you to route air conditioning to your feet if you wish.
Come on Ford, get with the program.
[If you have to, kluge/tape a piece of aluminized home clothes driver outlet pipe to your dash vent outlet on the passenger/driver side(s) to get some of that air down to your feet. This trick might tide you over until you can locate a custom shop or save up the $$ for a custom shop to do it neatly.]

I need a history lesson - didn't Ford have the cutaway market all to themselves for a while? They're acting like they do now - like they don't care if they cook a few RVers.

OK, my question...and please don't take this as an attack, is why don't all the new Ford's with the V-10 have this problem and why aren't there more complaints? The reason I ask is we just bought ours and I drove ours about 150 miles in 95-100 degree temps and don't remember noticing anything.
Is this a big issue on all of them or what? I would like to find out before our big cross country trip so I can fix if necessary

dmatt,
the heat gets extremely intense on upgrades. In cooler weather we don't really have a problem...BUT....on Upgrades...when you TRY to avoid running the AC in hot weather it is miserable. Especially when my son burns his toes on the doghouse latch. It got THAT hot.
The worse part....after we park at a campsite...the heat from the CAB coems Flooding into the RV house for a few hours. It makes it really hard to cool the House down even with the AC.'
Gosh...are any Ford Executives out here reading this thread??

From what I understand, the new 06 and present Ford Chassis have this problem, not the earlier cutouts. Why they went backwards, I don't know. Ford even hangs a warning tag in the front for future owners. But who'da thought it would get THAT hot. Don't they know that travel is a part of RVing...expecially in hot weather...even possibly towing uphill?
What is Ford thinking?
