made a three day trip to silverton colorado. this was the second year we went. it is an old mining town that now seems to have alot of small restaurants. we found one we liked and will go back again next year.

on the way down to the town of silverton.

leaves are a little slow turning this year.

train in the back ground comes up from durango with tourists.

train closeup

restaurant we found we like.

why we like restaurant. just kidding, but it was nice with some mirco beer to boot.

Cool photos; looks like the aspens are just starting.
If you go back, try Natalias. We ate there several times. Food and service were great. Prices were reasonable for Silverton.
Where did you camp?

Did you drive the road between Ouray and Silverton? Pretty scary dropoffs with no guard rails in some areas. That area has some off the best jeep/atv trails, can't wait to get back there some day.

I did that trip again this summer! What a great time. I did it when I was a kid some 32 years ago.

There used to be a free camping area just north of Silverton right on the river. There were no hookups or designated sites just a toilet and a big open area next to the river. At the right time it felt like boondocking.

There's some good camping around Silverton/Ouray in the two Natl Forests and in the BLM, both in campgrounds and dispersed camping. Just don't expect to find room around Fourth of July unless you get there very early!

The wife and I go boondocking and jeeping there every year. One of my favorite places on earth! Your photos made me salivate! I would love to be there to see the fall colors. BTW, my wife, me, and two of my sons spent a whole afternoon in the micro brewery, there in town, last summer. It has to be GOOD beer to keep me out of the jeep up there!
Thanks for posting...I love pictures.

For the heck of it , here'sa pic of Ophir Pass that Stickyeye was refering to. (Look real hard...there is a large SUV and a jeep on that road)

This is the headwaters of the Rio Grande...on Stoney Pass between Silverton and Creede.

My son looking at the jeep road we just came up...just east of Silverton.

Man, I love that place!
