is he tall enough for a 85? if so, go with the 85, that way he wont out grow it for a few years.
Thats what I am asking ??? 4'8"

My son is just coming off a KX85. He's 14 and actually outgrew it last year. He's 5'-6" now. He has had it for 2 seasons and has had a blast on it. He was on a XR 80 prior to that when he was 9. If your son can sit on the 85 and is on his tip toes to the ground. He should be ok. That's were my son started on his.

A buddy of mine just went through this with his 12 year old. His kid started on a 50, then a KX65, then a YZ85, then an RM125 all in a matter of about 20 months. Disclaimer is that his kid hit a HUGE growth spurt (10 inches in 10 months!). They ride at motocross tracks year round. The KX65 was the biggest mistake. He outgrew that bike in less than six months. Not just size, but how the bike jumped and handled as well.

I have a 10 year old boy (thsi week) that is 4'7". This will be his fourth season (we ride desert only...no motocross!) on a CRF70. He has definitely outdrown the CRF70 for this upcoming season. The CRF70 (new name for the old XR70) has been a perfect bike.

Because my buddy bought his kid the RM125, he has a perfect condition 2006 YZ85 for sale. I am buying it for my son. Just today, I was at the dealer buying gear oil to get all these toys I have ready for this season (I hate this part of riding!). I had my 4'7" son swing a leg over a 2008 YZ85. The 85 is TALL..VERY TALL! He definitely will not be able to touch with both feet, not even tippy toes. He will need to slide over to get one foot flat on the ground. If I wasn't getting such a deal on the 85, I might consider another play bike like a TTR or a 100.

But, my kid is a good rider and is more than ready to move up. So, I will skip the play bike and go straight to the crotch rocket!

Not sure if this helps, but good luck!

We have owned just about everything over the past 5 years. The weight of the 4 stroke bikes (TTR 125, CRF 230) proved to be dangerous for my boys. I went with the KTM SX 65 and 105. They are much lighter, responsive, and easier to ride and thus have been much safer. We have taken them up to 10k elevation and the desert. They always perform flawlessly. The 65 can get 54 miles before it runs dry so you can get plenty of riding in.

My 11 year old daughter went from a CRF 70 to a KLX 110 to a CRF 100 to an RM 85 in less than 3 years. She out rode the suspension on all of the four strokes. I recently purchased a used 2004 RM 85 and it included a Devol lowering link which lowers the bike 1.5" so the height is perfect for her now. The RM power valve motor is easier to ride than the Honda or Yamaha 85's and the suspension is light years ahead of any of the trail bike 4 strokes like the CRF 100 and weighs 30 lb less. I would look seriously at a used 2 stroke for your son.

I started my 12 year old on a TTR125 as his first bike to get used to the clutch, handling etc... We started on ATV's. Plus, as someone else mentioned this bike is bullet proof and provides enough to train him without hurting him. Other points for you to consider is how much you want time you want to spend keeping a 2 stoke 85 running all of the time. I have friends who race and it is a constant issue of keeping the bikes startable and tuned and ready to go. We are actually looking at the new Honda 150's which are 4 strokes but with race suspensions and a more MX type power band. We do not race but do ride at MX tracks and I am satisfied he has outgrown the TTR and is ready for an upgrade. My 9 year old is still riding the TTR90 just fine and will be ok for another season I do believe. Good luck and be safe!

My 12 yr old son moved up to a CRF 150R this year. He raced a KTM 85 SX last year.

I would go with the 65, 02 or older that way it is a green sticker bike.My 10 year old son rides a 02 kx65 and it is a good match. one thing to consider is if he is an aggressive kid go with the two stroke if he is a mellow rider get a 4 stroke. Those little two strokes have a power band that is pretty wicked, on the other hand they are very light and have moto-x quality suspension versus most of the thumpers that are around are heavy{ier} and the suspension is typically lacking for aggresive riding.

I agree. My 11 year old is currently on a KX65, although he is getting a KX85 for Christmas. My son's bikes in the past have been: PW50, XR50, TTR90, and KX65. Many of the four stroke bikes and expecially the TTR's don't have the suspension and power band of a two stroke.

It all depends on what kind of riding that you are doing..
