What is the best directions to the Cherokee NC KOA. I will be coming from Birmingham AL during the month of Nov. I have been to Gatlinburg several times but do not want to travel through the park pulling my 36' fiver. Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I-59 to Chattanooga, 74 to 441 north to Cherokee. Highway 74 is 4 lane much of the way, but it's 2 lane through the Nantahala Valley. The roads there are curvy and in summer will have many slow "rafting" buses, but it's a beautiful drive. It will seem slow through there, but it's still the quickest way. Once you clear the valley, it's 4 lane again to Cherokee, including 441.

Although you didn't ask, I have to agree with previous posters about the Cherokee KOA. It was a "been there, done that" experience for us.

I would NOT recommend hwy 74 after Chattanooga, as it goes thru the Ocoee gorge (very narrow and 18 wheelers travel thru there). You would also have to go thru Wesser and the Nantahala gorge area. If you took I-59 to I-24 to I-75 to I-40south, you would have to to over the mtn (Tn to NC). A lot of people don't like that stretch. Another option would be to take I-20 to Atlanta and I-285 around Atlanta to I-85east. Turn north onto I-985 to Gainsville, which becomes hwy 23/441. This hwy continues thru Ga and eventually to Cherokee. There is a mtn between Franklin and Cherokee, but not as much problem as I-40. We take this route to Dillard,Ga/Franklin,NC area---about a 5 hour drive. Cherokee would be another hour+. Good luck & happy camping. Rich & Deb Trussville

If you took I-40 from TN through to NC, you have to go through the gorge----while it is winding, it is not too hilly. Many tractor trailers drive through there. As long as you are careful, it should be okay. My 15 yr old drives through there with my husband (he has his permit) and said it freaked him out the first time he had an 18 wheeler on one side and the concrete barrier on the other side driving our F250. If you do take I-40 through to NC, you have to get off at exit 20--the Maggie Valley exit, drive down that road for 5 miles, turn left and head on that 4 lane rd (hwy 19) for several miles, turn right, go for a few miles and get on hwy 23/74 and travel on that for awhile to 441. You do not want to get off at exit 20 from I-40 and head over the mountain (Soco) to Cherokee. While it is only 19 miles over the highway, you do not want to pull a big camper over it. It is very windy and narrow. Pretty much anytime you head in or out of this area, you have to get over a big and windy mountain. I don't know any of the other routes mentioned, but I do know the I-40 to exit 20 route and I know many people who travel through the gorge with their motor homes and campers. Every time we drive through there, there are all different classes of campers driving through there. I hope some of this helps!

We have been contemplating a trip to Cherokee KOA. We have never been before...What are the issues you have with it?
Thanks
