State Parks --Jordan Lake or Falls Lake
The only problem is some of the parks close for the winter and the gates close at 6pm.
Also there is camping at the State Fairgrounds which is not too far from Durham.

Wow, the gate sure does lock early in the off season. Just wanted to stress that they do lock the gate and it's a long walk in if you don't make it back in time. Otherwise, we loved camping there.

Birchwood RV Park may be a possibility. I have not camped there so I can't offer any first hand experience. The Fairgrounds in Raleigh may be worth considering as well.
If you stay at the Fairgrounds, I should warn you that rush hour traffic can become very heavy traveling on I-40.

We have family in Durham and usually stay at Birchwood, since it is most convenient.
It's basically a trailer park, but the RV area is on one side, and it is fairly nice, and you don't have to drive through a lot of permanent resident areas. Most sites have full hookups. The park is away from the city, and is wooded. The manager, Sam, is very accomodating.
Have also stayed at Jordan Lake. It is beautiful, but a long drive to town, depending on how you define long. We were there in May, and the gates closed at 8:00. Missed it one night and had to find campsite by light of cellphone. It is a large campground and it is dark there.
There is also a campground in the country west of Chapel Hill called Spring Hill RV park. Have stayed there also. Very quiet, but also a looong way to Durham. Description would be similar to Birchwood. If you go there, be sure to get directions first from the manager.

SealevelRam, have you stayed at Birchwood? If so, would you go there again? If not, would you camp there in the first place? It IS very convenient to Duke Medical Center and that's what I'm really looking for, but I also want a place that is fairly decent. Don't need a lot of amenities 'cause we'll be there in the winter. I've visited their website and it sounds nice but I've also read a bad review on it. Your review was pretty decent. Just wondered if it's from first-hand experience or not.

I don't quite know how to say this in a nice way, so I will just say that given a choice, we would stay elsewhere. While in Durham 2 weekends ago, we checked it out, hoping that it would be a good place to stay while visiting family.

Bucky, tell me what you didn't like about it. We aren't looking for any place with a pool, playground or anything...just somewhere to put the house while I'm at Duke. Was it dirty? Crowded? What was there about it that you didn't like?

Pitapony Have you asked to stay in the parking lot? My daughter was there
for about a mounth once and I stayed at a motel, but there were several motor homes that they allowed to stay in the parking lot. I don't know what's your abilities to camp are, but this is just a thought??????
