Im running brand new set of 265/75 16 E (34XX lbs per tire single)10P R tires on my truck and I was a little surprised to feel how hot they were today when I stopped my truck. I put my hand flat on the sidewall and I was able to keep my hand there but barely... they were pretty hot both front and rear. They were aired to 60-ish front and 75-ish rear.

I run my BFG Rugged Trail Load Range E 10 Ply at 80psi all around. The rear tires will get warm to the touch, but never hot enough that you can't hold your hand on them. I have driven on them in Florida in the summer and you know how hot it can get down there in July.

Radio Shack sells an infarred thermometer. Just point it at your tire. It's especially useful in comparing tandem tires for heat produced by load bearing.

Agree with LanceCamper845. I put 80 in and they don't get "hot". I am not an expert but the heat may be related to the tires flexing too much.
Good Luck.

After hours and hours of driving on hot pavement towards Eastern Idaho towing boat and hauling the camper, I checked mine frequently. I was pleasantly surprised at how cool they actually felt. The pavement felt hotter than the tire at the same moment. And check them as soon as I stop the truck at rest areas.

Your tire mfrs website should have a chart relating loaded weight to inflation pressures. Yours sound low.

You can fry an egg on our tires on the sunny side of the truck just sitting in the driveway (truck not driven for 2-weeks)
I imagine that the best method to check and test/compare tire temps while underway, is to to drive your vehicle on the shady side of a mountain (completely blocking incoming solar) at highway speed (but not under cloudy conditions, as incoming solar will deflect and strike tires on sun side), when the ambient air temps are fairly stable at around 70-deg F, then shoot a good set of test points with infrared sensor (say, 5 locations on each tire at the same locales, minimum), do an average, at what you believe to be your best guestimated PSI for your load. Then, take another run at it in same ambient air temps with 10 PSI more in each tire (not to exceed maximum PSI, of course), and compare.
