We are currently in a RV park in San Carlos and a motor home just pulled in a few days ago with a terrible story. This was their first visit to Mexico; they stopped at Wal-Mart in Hermosillo. They were in there for 30 minutes, when they came out there 2006 F150 was gone. They also had passport cameras and other valuable miscellaneous items taken.
They spent some confusing time trying to fill out police report. They got the Royal runaround, but finally with the help of some friendly Spanish-speaking Americans they at least accomplished the paperwork. (Or they hope).
Sanborn is there insurance company and when they called there representative he said they would probably have a check in a week.
However after a few days more of calling, it seems that Sanborn is underinsured by another carrier and they are requesting additional information that may require them to go back to Hermosillo Police Department for more paperwork.
The store manager of Wal-Mart was of no help in fact he was rude. It is their guess that probably parking lot attendants and the Police Department are involved in this theft. Some of the people at Wal-Mart said that it only takes one minute to still a car. It seems that ranchers are the purchasers of the cars.
This certainly is going to change the way we leave our truck when they go to Hermosillo, but if there this bold, what would prevent them from just asking you to get out of the truck or car and take it anyway. This is very bad and I hope the governor gets this problem corrected ASAP.

Note: The Americans whose truck was stolen are taking this very calmly and are enjoying their visit here in San Carlos.

22 trucks are stolen from where? Do you work for a newspaper, with sensational headlines and no story to back it up? Just curious how you are correlating the two parts of your post. Feel sorry for the people who lost their truck, as we shop at that WalMart ourselves, but I'm sure there is more to the story than, our truck was stolen.

This is a problem even in AZ and CA. We installed a hidden cutoff/kill switch in our pickup and use it ALL the time, even in our driveway. When we were in the bottom of Copper Canyon last May, you would be surprised by the license plates on the pickups. The plates are from all over the USA and most are expired. Our pickup was parked in the campground and of course with the kill switch on. At best we will get a broken window and the inside cleaned out, but that is better than finding your tow vehicle gone. On a diesel you install the switch in the circuit to the starter solenoid and on a gas rig on the circuit to the fuel pump. If you want this done before you cross at Nogales, Rocky's Shell Station in Green Valley, AZ. installed both of my cutoff switches. His number is 520-625-6839, takes less than a couple of hours. Food and Mall nearby to spend your time while the switch is installed. I receive nothing from Rocky for this recommendation.

We are not trying to sensational anything the Wal-Mart employs verified the amount of trucks stolen and that was just for one month. We are currently building a home in San Carlos and love it here. So before anybody starts getting defensive you must also come to grips that there is crime in Mexico.
Were not trying to compare Mexico crime with US, were simply stating a FACT when you go to some of the large cities take extra precaution and watching your vehicle. The fact that you are in foreign country will make it more difficult if you lose your vehicle. If we lost our truck, it pulls are 5th wheel. This would be a major problem for us, we have another car down here but it would be difficult but not impossible to get this problem resolved. But more difficult than it would be if we were in the United States.
We are going to stay in touch with the people that lost there truck, and they are going to keep us posted on how long and how much the insurance company pays. We will post that as soon as we hear, I wouldn't expect any settlement very soon from what we've heard so far.

Mo, I would say it's probably a bigger problem in TX, AZ and CA, than it is in the interior of Mexico. No big box retail lot in the US has fencing and gated security, yet the majority of them do in the larger cities of Mexico. It does happen in Mexico, but less frequent, as they don't steal to joy ride, like the kids in the US, yet.

We also have heard if you put a cut off switch to the diesel fuel pump that the diesel will not run. But all of this is an excellent suggestion, whatever preventive security you put on, I would think it's important it would react immediately. You don't want them to go very far. We are definitely going to put a cut off switch on our truck. We will look for somebody here in San Carlos as were going to be here quite some time.

The problem is that the law penalties here and there are no deterrent. Commit certain crimes and participation in life as you once knew it should be over. Deal with the families that breed these thieves as well. You can sue a tobacco company. Why not those who raised thugs. And please don't play the poverty card. Lot's of folks in this world are poor and don't steal. You know what they did with horse thieves in the old west. Absolute fear is a wonderful thing.

Having to put a fence and gate around a retail facility should tell you something about the level of crime in that area. Businesses in high crime areas in the US do the same thing to 'protect' their customers. Having said this, the moderator will probably delete this post as well as all the other negative posts about Mexico. Heaven forbide the truth about Mexico ever got out. It is a crime infested, corrupt country with no future. Why do you think we have so many of its citizens in this country?
