If they are SRW trucks, they're the same truck... {****}
No reason not to buy an F350, but you will notice absolutely zero difference in ride, handling, performance, braking, etc. etc. etc.
If you find an F250 you like, buy it; if you find an F350 you like, buy it. There's no difference unless you're thinking of going to an F350 dually...
{****depending upon model year-- there are some very minor differences if you're thinking 05 or newer}
Honestly, if you'll feel better with a badge that says F350, that's what you should buy...just know that for most model years, an F250 is just as capable as an F350 SRW.

My 250 King Ranch, CC, SB, SRW with 18" tires will not fit under the 6'6" (78") bar in the parking lot of the West Edmonton mall. (ouch) Did you mean your garage door or the truck was 81". The 350 would be taller than the 250.
Our 250 with the v-10 pulls our 28' 5ver very well.
Wish you well.
All else being equal, and only $500 more for the F350, I'd get the 350. The additional payload and rear spring would be nice to have. It may also have a higher resale value.

The 350 is 81" according to the specs, our garage opening is 82". We test drove both last night and they rode pretty nice. We're looking at 2008's and ordering with only the options we use; so many seem to be overloaded. I'll think I'll go back to the dealer and measure the 350 on the lot. When I measured the 250 (even with 18" tires) it was about an 1" shorter than the Ford specs stated.

But the F-350 might be better for the next trailer if/when you go bigger.
I'd get the F-350
F250's and F350's are the same truck. No payload difference unless you go with a DRW. So pick what you want.
Here is a link to towing capacities so you can see for yourself. 2007's and before actually have more 5th wheel towing capacity than '08's. If you look the only difference is when you go up to DRW like stated above.
Go with the F350. I wish I had because when you add crew cab, 4x4, diesel engine you eat up all the carry capacity of the truck. I was shocked to find the slide in camper certification on my truck was only 780 pounds on a 3/4 ton truck and the 5th wheel max weight could only be 10,300 pounds. The F350 in 2003 was the same truck except for 4 inch blocks on the rear instead of 2 inch blocks. The GVWR was 8800 on my truck but a 350 was 9800. It is worth the extra money to get a 350.

I agree, and as an F250 owner I've sometimes secretly wished my "2" was a "3", even though since I have the camper pkg it really is an F350 in disguise.
Besides, I like cab clearance lights, and you very, very rarely see them on a 250, but most 350s have them...
What I'd add, though, is that I consider my "true" GVW to be 9900lb, same as the 350; if you are not comfortable loading beyond 8800lb, that's certainly up to you, but in the real world you don't have "less truck" than a 350 owner.
A post like this one got chippy a few weeks back, and someone posted that Ford's TSB to deal with customer complaints about the 8800lb GVW of F250s was to re-badge them to make the customer more comfortable!
