I have bought motorhomes and 5th wheels in the past, but never a truck camper. Depending on the dealer and the models both motorhomes and 5th wheels can be purchased for a 20 to 30% discount off the the msrp or retail. What kind of discount can you get on truck campers. I am looking at a Lance 845.

Any advice or opinions appreciated.

When I was shopping in 04, it was a real struggle to get anywhere close to 10 to 12%. Per sq ft., TC's are probably one of the most expensive RVs. It's a niche market.

well i shopped around and have to say the marvelous dealers (oxymoron name for them ) were very proud of whatever they sold. none of them would budge (TCs are becoming a hot item here in SoCal)so this was the best deal I could find within a reasonable distance I was about 10% less then retail...

I know how that goes. A dealer I had been to pretty much laughed me off the lot. I expected to go in and be able to haggle at least two grand off the top because I had cash, but he said "well I just can't give it away, I'll sell it at the sticker price no problem". I couldn't believe it. I figured he would at least counter my offer but he actually chuckled at it. If it was a car they would have been drooling over the offer. I guess I still have allot to learn about campers.

I didn't get much off my 835. I think here it's a lack of dealers. We've got an abundance of TT and 5'er lots. A new one is being built out on the highway west of town right now. And we've got one TC dealer down in town.

As for $/sf, TC's probably rival those rigs the NASCAR drivers stay in at the track.

No matter. I'm reliving the memories of my Grandfather's TC with my son.

I showed ours a much lower quote from another out-of-state dealer (about 10 hrs away,) and said if he matched it he could have our business. It took him less than a two minutes to return with the sales contract.

Sprad's in Reno and George Sutton in Oregon have low advertised prices online.

If Sprad's had it in stock, we'd have bought it from them, but we gave our local guy a shot and he came through.

huh...when I bought my AF in 2003 I told them right up front that I was expecting 20% off list and they didnt even haggle with me. I guess things are changing.

Thanks for the replies. It's interesting how different parts of the RV market operate differently. I guess the general conclusion is to look around and make the best deal you can.

If your one of those Yankee snowbirds, I'd suggest coming back north for a short trip either by truck or via the internet and do some shopping. Between the mortgage meltdown and the auto industry (which I'm unfortunately a slave to....) the used market is filled to overflowing which in turn is forcing the dealers to make some deep discounts to clean out there overfilled lots. The dealers are even posting on RVtrader.com!! I would seriously check Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and more specifically.... Detroit area, Flint, Saginaw, Gary, IN,... and around the east side of OH... Youngstown, Warren.. etc. We've been tracking the "traders" and "swappers" and it's obvious that people are unloading their toys and excess expenses; Harleys, motorhomes, property up north, etc. For those of us fortunate to still be working, there's deals out the yingyang out there. And as I said, we're seeing lots of overstock (including truck campers!!!!) out there. Good luck!!!

When we bought ours 4 years ago, our So Cal Lance dealer only came down about 10%. We were new to TCs and the lack of price reduction didn't really bother me......the salesman did spend many hours with us helping us pick out the right camper and options as well as making sure we picked the right truck for the camper. When we picked up our 845, he also made sure we knew how everything worked before we left the lot...... even called us a month later to see how we were doing and make sure we didn't have any questions.

Sometimes they earn those marked up prices
