I'd choose a used Foretravel ...BUT, since you didn't ask that, I'd pick the Allegro.

Which one feels more like home when you step in? Which one annoys you less when you A) go into the bathroom and move around. Sit at the table/couch and try and watch TV. Find a convenient place to store the BBQ etc outside.
To me if the Fleetwood has built this particular unit well and the Fleetwood Dealer is worth it then that would equal the Tiffen. I'm not a Fleetwood fan either. BUT I think a good local repair facility will trump any manufacturer provided the initial build is the same.

I would choose the Tiffin product.
As an aside, this focus on the WB hints to me the presence of the RV Consumer Group, as they are quite fond of touting the WB to length ratio as an important factor in road handling.
If that hint is not valid, please excuse this post.
If, however, you HAVE been reading propaganda from the RVCG, please know that the RVCG is primarily a small number crunching company selling their data on CD's and books. While their data are valid, the validity of their data is often not as valid. They do not buy or test any RV (like a popular company of a similar name does). Hence, their "assumptions" about how these data translate to real-world experiences is not proven.

I don't know why but I really don't like the smaller tires.
If those were the only two in the world available I would take the Southwind.
As far as one being "better", you can and will have problems with all RV's. Period. End of subject.
But you better be sure the boss is happy...

It's the ratio of WB to the overall length of coach that says something about stability. A 242" wheelbase in a 30' MH would be very stable, while a 242" wheelbase in a 45' MH would be squirrelly.
It's a mistake to assume that the number in the model name of the coach is also the length of the coach. Some are, and some aren't. Mine is only 1" from the actual length, but many are nearly 2' different. A 228" WB in a 34" MH = 56% WB/LOA which is good. If the MH with the 242" WB was in fact 36' long, then it's ratio would also be 56%.

I don't think with the 2 gassers in question, tire size or wheel base should be a deal breaker. Pick the one 'you' like best, and for gosh sakes take them both for a good test drive FIRST!!

Tough call. We set out wanting a Tiffen and would not have considered a Fleetwood but along the way we were also considering their product. In the end we bought a National RV Dolphin because it said 'buy me' to my wife.
The only say I had was in checking the Cargo Carry Capacity (CCC) to make sure we could actually haul our stuff around and tow our car within safe limits.
Some bonuses which were important to me came with the package. (not everyone here agrees with this but they were important to me) Workhorse Chassis - Allison Transmission, Longish wheel base to overall length, basement air, 22 inch tires, full body paint. The main deciding factor still being my wife. She loved the coach from the moment she set eyes on it and stepped inside.
At the end of the day, buy what you like with an eye to CCC and you will enjoy your RV experience.

I would go with the Southwind because of the larger tires, everything else being equal.

we're aware we need to test drive etc. know that the ccc's need to be in order. thanks. but somewhere along the line somebody mentioned a used diesel, lol. talk about being on the fence. we are also keeping our eyes peeled for a nice used diesel!
