Your problem may be corrosion or moisture in the remote start plug to the generator and this is a common problem. Look at your generator and you will see a cable coming out of the left side of the generator and there is a connector on the end, and then it runs inside the motorhome. Pull the connector apart and spray it good with electric contact cleaner and then shove it back together and back apart again to clean the contacts. Let both sides of the connector dry and then coat the pins with di-electric silicone and put the connector back together. That should fix you problem.

You can buy the contact cleaner and di-electric silicone at any automotive store.

I am not arguing your point but curious......how does a corroded remote start button cause the gen to start without pressing the button? Perhaps the button never fully releases the last time the gen was started and with a little giggling, it connected again causing the starter to engage?

Dave,

I am not sure exactly how the moisture or corroded contacts actually complete the start cycle but I have heard of several RV owners with the same type of 7.5 generator who experienced the same self starting problem. By cleaning the contacts and adding the spray appears to be the common solution to this rather common problem. The way I understand it the moisture and/or corroded contacts are on the wiring from the remote start button inside the coach to the generator itself.

I only offer this solution as a solution that others have implemented to solve that problem.

Interesting replies....I posted about this same problem a couple years ago with no useable responses.....have the same gen in a 2004 Coachmen.....you can bet I'll be checking the remote start plug as advised by Huey Pilot......it even pays just to read the posts you don't place yourself.....what a forum!!!!!! IMHO, of course

A couple years ago I was parked next to a guy whose Onan diesel generator started in the middle of the night. He did not have the autostart feature. He found the connection in the wiring harness to the generator was full of water.

The same thing happend to my Onan 7.5 and to two of my friends. After we cleaned up the plug and sealed it none of us have had any more problems.

I think Huey Pilot has a real good point. There is NO WAY that a cat will hold the button down for several seconds to start the generator. And if it is not what Huey Pilot suggested maybe Onan should have a recall on these series of generators because it has happened quit often to many RVers. It could be a dangerous thing to start while you are working on the generator. It could be considered a safety factor recall.

Hi John and Paula-
We posted almost the same question on 10/06/07. You can search topic and date to get all of our responses. I followed Norms advice and haven't had it happen since!
Good luck.
