back2nature wrote: Thanks for all your input. Didn't know they asked for the number of slides. I guess that would be a problem with the trees.
We have never been asked about slides on our A class but we have been asked how many feet. We got a 31 footer (Measures 33'8") because if you check around some State and Federal campgrounds have a 32 foot limit, never been measured but they do ask.
You may wish to do what we do because fitting into some sites will be impossible because of trees, rocks etc. Some grounds assign a spot when you reserve and some you pick it when you arrive at the front gate (most workers have no clue where you will fit), ether way what saves time is to get a medium to larger Phone/address book and put the campgrounds in and next time you go there walk around and mark the ones that you will fit in and in order with your favorite on top.
You can keep it handy when you reserve or know which ones to ask for when you get there. Saves you driving around looking and then going back to the gate/office.
Hope this helps,
Bud

we camped for a 2 nights at the KOA in tulsa OK. Lots of trees and branches, the motorhome next to us could not put out the 2 slides on the door side. Other side they could..tight spots to say the least.

Every time you go to a larger RV it will limit the number of sites you can get into a little further. It's simple physics...you can't put 6 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket When we went from our 25 footer to the 34 footer we have to give up a number of our favorite boondocking sites. Good luck / Skip

We camp at Forest Service & National campgrounds when we can. We rarely stay at RV camps. Across the country and in Calif. there are campgrounds that measure from tip to tip. BUT more than that, when they do let you try to find a site you need to fit. We wanted to stay under 30 but found a good deal on a Carriage Compass which is 30'11". We have only camped form 6 months and so far have been lucky in finding sites we fit in. In Yellowstone and the Sierras I had to work hard to get the 5th wheel in but I did it. There is no way we would have made it with a 33'.
Many campgrounds have a few spots for longer RV's but you don't have the choice of view. To us that is why we are out there.
Find the general layout you want. We (wife) had to have a large rear window. There are models out there. We just went to the show in Pomona and I think there are more '08s with shorter lengths than in the past few years.
Good Luck

We camped at a State park last week end for the first time and there were longer sites but the reservation system was off-line and I didn't get to reserve a longer site. At 26' I figured it wouldn't be a problem. Well the site we got looked good but between the trees and the large wood blocks keeping vehicles from wandering off the road or trailer pads it was a work out to squeeze and I mean squeeze that 26' trailer in. Then I had to park the truck at an angle to be off the road. Just my experience I'll not be going on impulse any more, will be watching the site lengths much closer from now on.

You may fit in the site, but getting to it can be a problem, we go to the state parks and I damaged my roof, trying to make a tight turn at night. took about an hour with help from fellow campers to backup enough to get out, had to drive across a wet lawn area with the 4x4 engaged to make it out.
another really nice park we tent camped at, has RV spots listed at 40Feet, but you can't make the tight turn with a truck 5'er combo, you can make it with a motorhome if you are really careful.
our fiver is 33 feet and the crew cab long bed combo comes out over 50 foot.
A king size bed sure beats tent camping, not as young as I used to be, that ground sure got hard

Echoing what others have said, problems navigating the campground roads and actually getting into a site are much more common than not being able to find a long enough site. The length limits aren't necessarily set by the campsites, but by the size of the road, tightness of the curves, and obstacle clearance. If you have a narrow campground road and a rock or tree at corner of the campsite pad, it's sometimes just not possible to get a long 5er around the obstacle and into the campsite.

Mine is right at 30' nose to bumper....and here is what I've found:
National Parks & National Forests - we are very limited in sites available due to size.
State Parks - fairly limited as well, but as a general rule, slightly better than Nat'l Parks.
Commercial Parks - no problems.
For my needs with a good mixture of the above every other weekend or so (From April through Oct), 30' is an absolute max. I had intended to get something in the 25-28' range, and ended up with one a slight bit bigger and am very glad I didn't go any bigger.
Size does matter!

Our Cardinal measures in at 39'-6". About every 5th time out we camp in state parks and have never had a problem finding a site. Of course, at the first come first served parks, we arrive before the weekend warriors get their for a better selection. We always ask about the size when making reservations and in the last two years, only one private CG informed us they didn't allow anything over 37'.
Size does matter, because its just so comfortable.
