I had a new bag of frozen chicken breasts partially thaw during a power outage 2 weeks ago and then refroze into a solid block. Last Sunday I got them apart under running water and made the mistake of putting them on some paper towel to dry. Of course they froze to the towel and I had to use the faucet again. I didn't want it to be frozen to the vacuum bags so I put them in fold lock top sandwich bags first. At least I'll be able to get them out of the sealer bags.

I've been wrapping my meats in plastic wrap before putting them into the vacuum bags--seems to work well, but I haven't defrosted and used any of the things I put into the freezer yet.

I looked at the Super Wal*Mart where the plastic bags are in the grocery section. Is that where you're finding them? Or is it over in housewares? We had no luck, unfortunately.

I got mine today at a Wal*Mart Supercenter and it was in the grocery section in the aisle with the plastic bags and aluminum foil ..... Will try it out when we start camping again. For now I will use my big one in the house.

Ok, I have a question. I did an Amazon search and found the starter kit for $23. They are offering a roll seal bags with the kit. Now why would they offer something that won't work with the unit?

vacuum sealer = sealer bags/roll
Not only is $23 more than I got mine for at local stores but after adding $6-7 bucks shipping you can get a fair amount of gas for driving around searching the local stores to find it.

I hope no one minds me reviving an old thread, but I got the Handi-Vac a week or so ago, after discovering it on my grocery's shelf. For those of you who have had one for a long time, do they hold up? Are you still happy with yours? I would think, if they work well, that they would be perfect for camping because of their use of zip-top bags and they are small, portable and battery operated.
So far, anything I've sealed in the freezer has held. But two bags so far won't hold a seal with my ground coffee. I buy a 12 oz. bag of coffee, whole bean, and grind it in the store. I then try to keep it air tight at home. I had been using a one-quart air-tight canister, but I thought the Reynolds bags would keep even more air out. They lose their seal after only a half hour or so when stored at room temperature. Maybe I've just used two bad bags.

I use mine all the time and no problem. My husband made me a T stand to put the plastic bags over to dry. I do take out the food from Reynolds bags and thaw my food in the other bag I use. Then just rinse the reynold bag. No more Freezer burns and food come out much fresher.

I had vacuum packed some steaks and frozen them. Recently I lost all the food in my freezer and refrigerator when we had no power in the stick house for over 2 weeks (thank you Ike). I was able to get to the house after 4 days to clean out the stuff. It was all ruined but I did not have to fight that horrible smell. The bags held their vacuum and were totally sealed. Some had been in the freezer over a month.
Both retired. 1 year until son finishes college, then financial freedom! We lost Max, the Schnoodle after 16 wonderful years but now enjoy Nicklaus Von Schnoodle (Nicky), who is a full time job. Our new Allegro Bay 34 XB is wonderful.
