Too many forums already. By the time I check the Jeep forum, RV forum, military RV forum... I used to spend most of my time here on the RV forum, now I try and check in every week or so. Sure don't need another RV forum... not unless I want to take RV Net off my favorites.

I've got my first level license, but still stumbling around with my hand held Yaesu VX 5R. It is a 3 band radio, but still not sure about using more than just on & off!! I have found that my 110 charger doesn't have the right sized connecter to plug into radio to charge the battery and it is the charger that came with the radio!! I have to contact the HAM store south of Portland to see what they have that would fit.

Still trying to figure out how to attach the portable antenna to the fiberglass roof! I have thought of epoxying a piece of metal on the roof just above the drivers seat to mount the magnetic base to.

Would be interested in a HAM forum. I'll put this in My Forums and follow what happens.

Guess I should add that to my signature!

WD0AKH here. I have been inactive for several years. My father was a ham (W0CPC) my wife and brother are also licensed but are inactive. I would check in on you guys from time to time if you had a forum on here.

KE7BZC has a point. Some of us studied electronics (Of course I got my license while in high school) and read the owners manuals over and a over and a over again so we know a bit about our radios. Others can use an Elmer or three, perhaps a ham forum might not be a bad idea her, only call it "Elmer's Place" or some such.

KE7BZC: Re Epoxying a sheet of steel to the roof, not a bad plan really, but do not trust epoxy, secure it with good strong bolts in the corners. However a few other things to think about,, A 2 MTR antenna is, at the minmum 19" tall, (Full size) of course you can use a "Rubber duck" (Rubber covered spring) or even a "Stubby" Very short) but on some RV's you are getting close to 13'6" and antenna damage is very possible. I put a diamond dual band on the mirror arm on my rig, it's a "No ground plane" type and works quite well

The antenna comes with several mount type options. One is PL-259, though not the best connector for VHF/UHF (Even if it's nick-name is UHF connector, from back when UHF was 2 digit MHZ, I'm not QUITE that old) but you can get 2" PL-259 barrel/feed through connectors Might be long enough to do some good (I truly do not know the thickness of my roof)

The Ham Store may have some antenna suggestions for you.

KD5QE here.

The call sign plus 146.52 is stenciled on my spare tire carrier on the back of the fifth wheel. Also, along with CB Ch13.

I get far more calls on 146.52 than I do on that supposed RV channel 13.
